Re: Desalination plant for Adelaide

Bulldozer, I think in effect they are doing what you are suggesting with a small variation. The highest rate of tariff reflects the extra cost of desalination, and the lower tariffs reflect the cost of the other cheaper options. ie if we only use small amounts of water, the 'free' water from dams in...

Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade

Are the H cars running on the weekends?

The 2.30pm today was a no-show.

Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade

Bulldozer, The states and territories do NOT have money enough to run their services. I refer you to the research report by the Australian Parliamentary Library on the matter. http://www.aph.gov.au/LIBRARY/Pubs/rn/2002-03/03rn13.htm Australia is still one of the most fiscally vertically imbalanced f...

Re: "Premier flags changes for TransAdelaide", ABC news article.

Part of the problem with ALL infrastructure in SA is that during the eighties and nineties governments of both political colours got rid of their infrastructure planners as they downsized the public service. Without people to do the planning, there is no proper identification of infrastructure needs...

Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade

It is not an either or proposition. With a little thought in the design one can mix and match the solar and 'glass/acrylic' panels to provide both light and solar power. It would mean some clear panels removed and a larger number of translucent solar panels installed. However, any architect/engineer...

Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade

Hi AtD,

There is absolutely no problem with the trams getting round the corner. I think the curves at the St Kilda Museum are sharper, and the longer H1 tram gets round with no trouble.

The interesting point is whether or not the H cars can pass each other on the curves.

Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade

Hi Rhino, I am quite sure - there is a map of the tramway system in the nineteen fifties here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trams_in_Adelaide If you click on the map it expands so that you can see that the Henley line must have gone the Currie/Grenfell axis. There are also a couple of books that mig...

Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade

A few points here - hope you don't think I am being picky. The old Adelaide street tramway system was designed originally for wider trams. For example, the C class tram was 8'-11' (2.72m) and the F class dropcentre was 8'-10" (2.69m). So of course H cars of 2.65m width could negotiate all of th...

Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade

Hi Will, You have hit the nail on the head of my concern with your noting that the H cars are long (Actually the Adelaide H1 class is longer - there is one of them at the St Kilda tram museum). However, it is that length that is one of the major factors in whether or not there will be a crunch. The ...

Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade

I admit that the question of the curve on North Terrace is one that is bothering me. The design of the track in Vic Square and the median strip in North Terrace at the corner shows that the loading gauge of the H cars was not taken into account. ie the H cars take up more room on curves than the Fle...

Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade

AtD

You are so right.

All those posts might have been useful when the decision to build the tramline was being made. Now it's been built, the tramlovers have won. Game over. Winners are grinners.

Does anyone know when the first revenue tram rolls down to City West?

Re: Desalination plant for Adelaide

The discussions here highlight the basic problem that SA is facing in trying to come to grips with the problem of water. There are several points of view which are almost diametrically opposite. There are those that want to get on and do something, and there are those whose approach is to continue t...

Re: Desalination plant for Adelaide

SA Water along with the Highways people and the STA (former) got rid of most of their planners in the eighties and nineties. Which means that they are now on a learning curve that will take a few years. Money is not really the issue if you do not have the people to actually do the planning work. No ...

Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade

I guess the real question about clearances will come when we have H cars trying to pass each other on the King Wm / North Tce curve.
