Re: Desalination plant for Adelaide

The only external water source to the main reservoirs was the pipeline from Mannum, hence while technically there is a pipeline linking them all together, its heading in the wrong direction, and may require some changes. The Mannum pipeline only connects to the northern reservoirs. There is a secon...

Re: fabricator's Tonsley to Reynella (and beyond) railway

Allowable by who? Although it's very steep for a railway, it's still technically feasible. Conventional railways are limited to grades no greater than about 3.5%. Achieving that grade for a line adjacent to the southern expressway would be very difficult/expensive given how steep the terrain is in ...

Re: fabricator's Tonsley to Reynella (and beyond) railway

A railway build alongside the Southern Expressway would have to contend with grades in the order of 7 - 8%. Those grades are much higher than the maximum allowable for a railway. Also the success of Perth's railway had more to do with high average speed obtained due to the generous spacing of statio...

Re: Electrification and Resleepering of TransAdelaide Network

Never heard of such a proposal, But I suspect that building this line (About 210 km) would be a cheaper way to allow Melbourne to Perth double stacking (assuming that the Mildura line already has the appropriate loading gauge to allow double stacking) than building the hills diversion (150km route)...

Re: Electrification and Resleepering of TransAdelaide Network

Are you aware there is a possibility of Melbourne Container freight going via Mildura and Broken Hill. Apparently there is a group looking at this possibility. On Railpage forum in the victorian section under " Mildura Passenger service status/Return' on page 20, Steamkiwi has indicated that t...

Re: Electrification and Resleepering of TransAdelaide Network

The Bunbury Street tunnel in Melbourne would still restrict double stacking of containers. Retrofitting that for double stacking would be very expensive given the limited space in the area. Yes it's a problem, but this isn't the only project that would make use of an enlarged Bunbury Street tunnel....

Re: Electrification and Resleepering of TransAdelaide Network

I don’t see how it could possibly be feasible to build a railway diversion through the hills given the huge cost to replace a line that serves its purpose ok. The advantages of less noise and arguably improved safety is not worth spending >$500m for a diversion. With a loading gauge increase to e...

Re: Railcar Passenger service, Angaston to Adelaide.

It seems unclear what will happen to the line beyond Gawler, which is used for a daily stone train to Penrice, once the Gawler line is standardized. I would like to see the Gawler line resleapering and standardization extended to Tanunda so that the stone train can continue to run. With an upgraded ...

Re: #U/C: Adelaide University Engineering Building - 8 lvls

Noticed that the Adelaide University website now calls the building Innova 21.
I was wondering what it would be called given that there is already Engineering North, Engineering South and Engineering Maths, but Innova 21 is a bit strange, hopefully that name is not permanent.

[COM] Re: 'Northern Connector'

The proposed freight rail corridor is fine, but will The Ghan and Indian Pacific use this standard gauge line or will they still go through the burbs? The Ghan, The Indian Pacific and all other standard gauge traffic would use the new route. If the project goes ahead it will be dependent on a major...

Re: Mini Golf on Festival Centre

It’s not a bad idea, I agree that minigolf would make the area much more vibrant and colourful and would be a big improvement on the present space which looks ugly and is used for nothing. The mini golf could incorporate various sculptures/structures, green shrubs and water flows that would make t...

Yes it is interesting what will happen to the land if the site is closed, probably not a hospital though since it is so close to Flinders.

Re: Mitsubishi to Shut Adelaide Plant

It is very disappointing to see so many jobs lost but the reality is that in a small market like Australia it is very difficult for a car manufacturer to be viable. It has been apparent for a while that the closure of the plant is inevitable. Hopefully the employees will be able to find jobs in the ...
