Re: News & Discussion: General CBD Development

This site, or group of sites fronting Currie, Gilbert and Peel Streets has just come on the market. Haven't seen a site this large in the centre of Adelaide since 60 King William Street (the former Southern Cross Arcade) changed hands. https://www.realcommercial.com.au/for-sale/property-20-22-curri...

Not surprised, with the current cost of construction and the risks associated with it, it's pretty hard to justify any major projects at the moment.

Possibly the basement excavation and retaining structures has been contracted out to another civil contractor? Sometimes the basement works and superstructure are done by different contractors on some jobs.

Re: Flinders University - Developments & News

how come all this money spent on 'improving health' hasn't been leading to better health outcomes over these past few decades but rather worse? Probably because the governments keep throwing money at building new facilities, but not spending money to maintain and manage the existing facilities and ...

We were advised that the office lights are on sensors, so will switch themselves off to save energy when unoccupied. The lifts appear to be that modern 'dispatch' system where you request a lift, and the keypad tells you which one to use. If I'm not wrong, that means you may wait longer for a lift,...

I noticed yesterday that some scaffolding has gone up around the former STA House on North Terrace - anyone know whats happening? Hopefully its not getting a tacky "new modern" facelift that involves grey cladding....
Replacing the combustible cladding to the facade.

Re: News & Discussion: General CBD Development

Great move: https://indaily.com.au/news/2023/07/26/vacant-cbd-buildings-ripe-for-apartments/ This feels like a massive wasted opportunity by the City of Adelaide to look more broadly at buildings around the centre of Adelaide that may be potential conversions to residential, not just the above grou...

Re: News & Discussion: O-Bahn

40-50 years would be the expected lifespan of the O-Bahn concrete track. Perhaps consideration could be taken to undertaking a 3-stage closure (Medindie to Klemzig, Klemzig to Paradise, Paradise to Tea Tree Plaza) to allow for full replacement of the track and upgrades/repairs of any other infrastru...

Cores in office buildings used to be in the middle in the past as this was the most structurally efficient way to do so. Tenant requirements in recent years have changed this. Tenants are requiring larger open floorplates with better natural lighting, and as a result the core is usually on one side ...

Re: News & Discussion: Trams

The whole utilising ground level power system in lieu of overhead power lines is fanciful unless they can somehow convince the state government/DIT to invest in a new tram fleet with the capability of utilising the ground level power system. Also, single track operation would be very shortsighted - ...

It would be interesting to see if Australian Unity buys this site as well after buying the site next door - that would give them the whole block between North Terrace, West Terrace, Rose Street and Newmarket Street to develop

How realistic is retaining heavy rail with "battery-electric" or "hydrogen fuel cell powered trains" as mentioned in the article? Japan has a few battery powered trains in service, and there is currently a hydrogen powered train in testing. The battery powered train that runs in...

Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide Airport & Airlines

I never understood the ADL - MEL leg, thought it must have just been an empty plane (in this day and age!?) so they could centralise maintenance and crew accommodation out of MEL. Feedback from those travelling from AKL - DIA was that they HATED the stopover in Adelaide, which is understandable whe...
