[PRO] Re: Grange-Holbrooks-East Ave Dog Leg

At last... an intersection upgrade that's actually worth spending tens of millions on!

Re: Sir Donald Bradman Drv / Marion Rd Upgrade

Why should future infrastructure go out of its way to cater to present development that's not even particularly high density? Is there any good reason why (with trams and supportive zoning) shops and restaurants wouldn't be built along SDBD? Using SDBD, it's just 6km to Victoria Square. But if you ...

Re: Sir Donald Bradman Drv / Marion Rd Upgrade

I think that falling down bridge needs to be rebuilt before even thinking of putting trams down it Is there any actual structural problem with the bridge? Or is the problem just cosmetic? And twenty years from now, when any problems with the bridge are sorted, do we want to be in a situation where ...

Re: Sir Donald Bradman Drv / Marion Rd Upgrade

Taking light rail down Henley Beach road takes advantage of the existing retail and hospitality that is well established there. HBR is already The Parade of the inner west, so let's build on that. People want to live close to areas with restaurants, pubs and shops not just a bunch of apartments on ...

Re: Sir Donald Bradman Drv / Marion Rd Upgrade

The obvious solution to that is to change the zoning!
SDBD is a more direct route from the airport to the City, and not having buses along the same route would make it easier to fill trams.

Re: Sir Donald Bradman Drv / Marion Rd Upgrade

A tram down HBR would do well in supporting the current and future mobility of the ageing demographic there, and then also encouraging future redevelopment of the corridor as a high street between Holbrooks Road and South Road. Just think of the cluster of commercial activity focused around Drakes....

Re: Sir Donald Bradman Drv / Marion Rd Upgrade

I think the preferred tramway route is via Henley Beach Rd and Airport Rd. It is… and it shouldn’t be! That route’s much better suited to buses as many different bus routes use HBR. Converting them all to tramways would be expensive, and having a mixture of modes in the same corridor would be less ...

Re: Sir Donald Bradman Drv / Marion Rd Upgrade

The cost seems very high for what’s proposed, and acquiring fourteen properties sounds a bit excessive.

Two questions spring to mind:
Is this being done to create diversionary capacity for when South Road is being upgraded?
What can be done to make provision for a City-Airport tramway via SDBD?

Re: News & Discussion: Electricity Infrastructure

Germany got 37% of its electricity from solar and wind last year, 3.1% from hydro, and another 8.6% from biomass. Different power generation methods have different cost structures, and LCOE figures are misleading because they're heavily dependent on assumptions. Often one of those assumptions is an ...

Re: News & Discussion: Electricity Infrastructure

I've not seen general indications of the overall cost/efficiency of turning electricity to hydrogen and back again compared to pumping water uphill and down again. Baroota Pumped Hydro seems to still be an active proposal to provide 200MW for 8 hours if built. As it will take 3.5 years to build and...

[U/C] Re: Main South Road & Victor Harbor Road Upgrade

Driving along Victor Harbor Road this week I was quite astonished to find they’re building a roundabout on the section between Old Noarlunga and McLaren Vale!
Why isn’t that intersection being grade separated?

Re: News & Discussion: Electricity Infrastructure

Continuing the discussion from the O-Bahn thread: How much fossil fuels are subsidised is an issue that is difficult to come to a firm conclusion on. Certainly if externalities are included it's enormous, but assuming they're excluded, the next contentious issue is in what circumstances tax breaks c...

Re: News & Discussion: O-Bahn

'Tis simply false to say we're "backfilled from interstate" . The reality is we have two electrical connections to Victoria (one limited capacity, the other very limited capacity) and we're a net exporter of electricity. I'll address the issues in more detail in the next few days, along wi...

Re: News & Discussion: O-Bahn

If you're going to electrify the obahn and have electric buses running on it, wouldn't it make sense to either have overhead wires, or a 'powered' rail down the centre at 'ground' level like some tram systems have to power them? Unlike trams, which are earthed through the rails, buses need two over...
