Re: News & Discussion: Trams

Hi, The specific cost saving that could halve cost is the use of open ballast vs the concrete slab. As the Glenelg line shows, it is quite practical. Further, open ballast track can be topped with turf, or other covering appropriate for the area. Surely a consideration in the national capital? In t...

Re: News & Discussion: Trams

Note also that the first stage of light rail saw more than 2.2 million trips in the first 6 months. From what I can determine, that's about the same as the Glenelg tram does in a full year (not counting the free trips in the city)! Invest in good infrastructure and it does pay off. Yet people still...

Re: News & Discussion: Trams

I lived in Gungahlin, Canberra before moving to Adelaide which is where their new tram starts and stops. It probably still is one of the fastest growing suburbs in Australia and they’ve had the luxury of being able to turn lots of empty space into high density living right next to the new line e.g ...

https://the-riotact.com/light-rail-stage-2a-to-be-wire-free-as-approvals-process-moves-to-next-phase/357853 Some interesting news about the next phase of light rail in Canberra, being wire-free. This means that new and existing light rail vehicles will need to be fitted with onboard energy storage ...

Re: News & Discussion: Roads & Traffic

The otr and spotlight are not part of the land acquisition. The child care centre is the only new significant thing in the way. I still don't see a better way for these land purchases to occur. They announced what they wanted to do, allocated funding and bought properties at that point. How do you ...

Re: News & Discussion: Adelaide Metro Trains

Dry Creek Station used to be used like that. I assume it was a hangover from trains to Northfield being interleaved with the ones from Gawler. There was a third track to facilitate the transfers. It may even have had island platforms both sides so transfers either way could be straight across. Just...

Re: News & Discussion: Roads & Traffic

In regards to the slip lane, I was taught to treat a slip lane like a separate t-intersection, where, as described above, you must give way to "any vehicle approaching from your right" (as well as pedestrians on the cross-walk. In most other states, crosswalks at slip lanes are given the s...

Re: News & Discussion: Roads & Traffic

Umm, has everyone missed the start of that rule: "If there is no turn line indicating how the turn is required to be made..." In the above example and most traffic light intersections, there is a turn line. In which case the rule is that you cannot cross the turn line. You can see above th...

Re: News & Discussion: Trams

Yes the tram extension was badly managed, that's where the money was wasted. The tram line itself I am happy with as I've said previously somewhere under this topic or perhaps elsewhere regarding the hospitals. However this tram line should've replaced the O-Bahn. So making the O-Bahn tunnel unnece...

Re: News & Discussion: Trams

I can't wait until we have driverless trams. That will mean we can have high frequency public transport 24/7. This is the direction the government should be taking, instead of driverless cars. Just because we can have 24/7 operation doesn't mean we will . Apparently the driverless bus in Munno Para...

Re: News & Discussion: Trams

The stop finishings seem to get cheaper (or at least inconsistent -- no paving and less glazing this time) with every iteration, but I guess that's unsurprising given the Nth Tce blowouts. Glad to see an accessible stop either way. Meanwhile in Canberra  Looks nice, but doesn't look like it p...
