Re: Climate change
The desal plant is currently running at about 1% capacity. 10% aka 30megalitres/day aka over 5% of metro Adelaide typical requirements. https://www.sawater.com.au/community-and-environment/our-water-and-sewerage-systems/water-sources/desalination/adelaide-desalination-plant-adp https://www.sawater....

Re: News & Discussion: National Broadband Network
My place, on Rundle Street Adelaide, is scheduled for last half 2018 & FTTC. Except I know it won't work here because I've seen the state of the copper wires in my building. There's rusty installs from the late 1980s (a technician's card in the MDF proves the dates). There's a mess of broken wi...

Re: Another widespread power outage in SA
A private business cannot work on the assumption of supplying a consumable (in this case electricity) and worry about the cost of the raw material (in this gas) afterwards. Isn't this what the electricity industry is attempting to do to consumers with spot price charging? Users such as supermarkets...

Re: Another widespread power outage in SA
Engie has incentives to keep Pelican Point mostly offline. While offline there is less supply and higher prices for their subsidised critical coal plants in Vic. The rules of the NEM are broken and do nothing to attempt to ensure power supply or even price control to consumers. The NEM simply ensure...

Re: Another widespread power outage in SA
That's what was 'said' after the fact. At the senate hearing they admitted that it was broken and has been since 2013. So Engie lied twice to AEMO about the availability of their generator? 1739 AEMO seeks advice from Engie on the availability of the off line generating unit at Pelican Point.C Engi...

Re: Another widespread power outage in SA
But Pelican Point was outputting 330MW on Thursday 9th once instructed, so the second unit was able to produce at least 100MW. That's the output on one gas turbine and the steam output turbine of the gas turbine. That is the combined cycle function that makes it the cheapest gas generator in the co...

Re: Another widespread power outage in SA
Pelican Point stated they could not bring their second unit online due to no gas for it. Engie have committed most all their gas for export. It isn't that the power station isn't able to effectively compete in power generation, it is that they find it more profitable to use their gas elsewhere. We s...

Re: SA Budget 2016: Adelaide tramline to be extended to East
Why should there be any problem with trams crossing the king William St bridge over the River Torrens .After all it was design for trams and 100's of trams a week crossed it until the end of trams in the late 50's. I assume engineering of bridge loads etc has come a long way since the 50's (excludi...

Re: Another widespread power outage in SA
I find it interesting how easily people are sidetracked. Nsw had load shedding last week, they shut down a large smelter to reduce load. https://au.news.yahoo.com/nsw/a/34386053/nsw-smelter-at-risk-from-power-cut-union/#page1 That accounts for 10% of nsw power usage. SA shed 5%. That was after telli...

Re: Another widespread power outage in SA
Can someone please give me a preferably unbiased explanation as to why the state government seems to have pushed so hard for wind power? Wouldn't it have made more sense to go for solar first with places like Port Augusta being hot and sunny for most of the year. 100% of the wind farms in SA were f...

Re: Another widespread power outage in SA
Maybe SA government will buy Pelican Point from Engie.
Clearly Engie do not have much interest in the plant generating electricity at its full capacity.
If it got Pelican Point and Torrens Island back under government control we would have a lot of control over output and price.

Re: Another widespread power outage in SA
Pelican Point did not turn on their second unit. The load shedding stopped due to reduced consumer demand. Had the demand not reduced the outage would have continued indefinitely as the NEM/AEMO proved they are unable to secure any electricity for consumer demand. http://engie.com.au/media/newsitem....

Re: AEDs - distribution, public access, awareness
Good advice - generally thought they were for public use based on some things I have seen on TV recently. But then I guess you shouldn't believe everything you see on TV... I think there is a lot of info that says that people should give it a crack. I just would hate for those trying to help to be ...

Re: AEDs - distribution, public access, awareness
Best action is get trained help(eg ring 000 or find someone) and perform CPR if you know how. I would be more confident in someone taking instructions from 000 regarding the AED than the audio messages they play. Humans can interact much more intimately with each other and the instructions would lik...
