Just noticed the elevators on capital city run externally.... would've been a dizzying ride up - love it!

By the way, i'm told by city council that adelaide capital city was also known as tower of inspiration.

The 'Henry Ayers' Hotel, proposed back in 1998. It looks like it would have occupied the site where the Palais apartments were built.

Not normally my style of architecture, but that looks much better than the rubbish they ended up building.

However, talk of building such a hotel date back in the late 90's, and indeed the first proposal was for a $30 million, 7 level hotel which was to have 126 rooms, 130 carparks, convention facilities and restauratns. Although what was eventually developed has pretty much the same characteristics, the same cannot be said about the architecture.
This was the original design:
The hotel, then known as the 'Peninsula Hotel' was by Giuliano Ursini. That design was actually approved by the port Lincoln City Council in 2001, and work was expected to have commenced in early 2003.
That's seriously hideous. I am sometimes concerned about architects and designers in Australia. They certainly do have some odd preoccupation with kitsch, ugly and tacky facades.

Back in the 80s I recall a 25 level pyramid shaped building for the harris scarfe site which the council knocked back I think . That would have been sensational. Better than the rubbish they ended up building . Also in the 80s a 17 level green glass tower to replace the old westpac bank on the corner or north terrace and king william which I think also got knocked back. Two sensational ideas which the council stopped .
