Seaside hotel complex to bring in the tourists
By MATT WILLIAMS
07jan06

TOURISM in the city and its local economy is expected to boom when a $45 million, seven-storey hotel opens its doors late next year.

Not only will the hotel feature 111 rooms, it will include a gym, pool, conference facilities for up to 500 people and is situated on the waterfront, overlooking Boston Bay.

It is hoped the hotel will attract visitors from around the world because of its unique location.

Demolition of several buildings on the 5000sqm site starts this weekend with construction expected to begin next month.

Corporate entities are being targeted by the developers with the potential for international car manufacturers to launch their new products inside the complex.

The idea for the hotel was spawned three years ago by Port Lincoln tuna baron and multi-millionaire, Sam Sarin.

The initial plans put to the Port Lincoln Council were for a $25 million hotel but those have changed significantly since then.

The complex has been leased to the Hurley Group, run by prominent hotelier Peter Hurley, with Adelaide Crows players Mark Ricciuto and Simon Goodwin also involved in the operation.

Lincoln Lakes Development general manager Adrian Griffen said the hotel would directly and indirectly employ up to 120 people.

"This is going to be a great boost for the town and the people who utilise the function areas from Adelaide, interstate, and overseas will stay in Port Lincoln because it's not like they can drive home at the end of the day," he said.

"The biggest selling point will be its function areas and it will cater for large weddings and other types of functions."

It will be a four-star hotel and is based on a "resort, holiday style".

"You always get a lot of holiday people in town and this will give them another option of having somewhere to stay while they're in Port Lincoln," Mr Griffen said.

Rainwater collected by the complex will be retained and recycled within the hotel.

There are already five hotels in Port Lincoln - the Grand Tasman, Great Northern, Boston, Pier, and the Marina Tavern.

This is excellent news. I remember an article in the Sunday mail a few years ago about this development, but because I did not hear anything about it for so long I imagined it had been cancelled.

This is excellent news, and I am sure it will help Port Lincoln to grow, and it may possibly become South Australia's premier regional city.

Here is the original design, I'm not sure what the new one looks like.

Fourth I think, behind Mount Gambier and Whyalla. Pt Lincoln's population is around 13,000, Whyalla's 21,500 and Mt Gambier's around 23,000. Still, it's pretty well known for it's fishing industry. Pt Lincoln also has the highest number of millionaires per capita in Australia.

Yup. When they sell Southern Bluefin Tuna for around $70/kg to Japan. That's money swimming in that sea! :D
