Adelaide's Own 'Federation Square'

#1 Post by bm7500 » Wed Jan 02, 2008 6:11 pm

Hi All,

I took a wander around Adelaide today to kill some time whilst my car was in for a service. Instead of just driving through Adelaide at 50km/h it was a great opportunity to get up close an personal with the architecture, transport and people of our fine city (which is something I don't often do).

My little expedition inspired a few ideas, and one of these is our own version of a mass meeting place such as that in Federation Square in Melbourne, the location..... The Adelaide Festival Centre Plaza.

After walking through this area today, you soon realise how under utilised this space is. And to be honest, this area has been neglected to an extent that it is now an embarrassment to the city! (Here comes the whinge); the whole area is dirty, the paint on those fugly blocks is all faded, none of the water features are being used and are all stained brown and half of the garden beds resemble the Sahara as all the plants are either dead or dying. Basically its a disgrace! :x

I think those stupid & fugly blocks in the plaza area have well an truly outlived their appeal! And the garden beds don't have to be so barren. With a little thought and planning, these garden beds could be renewed with drought tolerant plant varieties and still be visually appealing.

In addition to this, once the area is cleared of all the crappy 'art' it would provide a generous amount of space for a public plaza area where a permanent giant screen could be located. And why not stop there, A stage area could be added and a number of small cafe's & restaurants could line the boundary between Parliament House and the Plaza area. Its a stones throw away from Bus, Train & Tram services and would bring life back to this otherwise dated, dirty and disused precinct.

That’s just my :2cents: worth, but i would be interested to know others thoughts and suggestions. I have included some pics of the area below.

Cheers!

If you think it's bad now, you should have seen it five years ago.

BTW, that "fugly art" in your photo is actually an exhaust stack for the Festival Centre car park.

I too think this is a perfect area for a giant screen and community event space. As it currently is, the plaza is very much under-utilized. However, there may be some problems associated with re-developing the plaza, as I recall that the Hajek sculptures may be heritage listed. However I think a compromise may be to affix a giant screen to the sculpture in the middle photo-picture.

Here is a quick impression of how much space there is on the site.

Does anyone remember the series of pools and narrow water channels that used to run along the Plaza? I don't think they were part of the original design, but must have appeared around the late '80s or early '90s. I seem to recall them being tiled with white and black tiles, but I could be wrong.

On a side note, it's such a shame that the drought and more stringent water restrictions have clamped down on Adelaide's public water features. There are so many waterfalls and fountains that I remember from years ago that are now pointless, barren areas - the waterfall in Renaissance Arcade, the cascades around Grenfell Centre, or the colonnades surrounding the smokestack on the Festival Plaza.

A few issues that might come up with this being a mass meeting place:

1) Load bearing issues - probably doesn't have the capacity for thousands of people at once.

2) Noise - I remember being told off years ago when i was still at school for making too much noise in this area, apparently it can be heard in one of the production spaces downstairs.

3) Heritage - The Adelaide Festival Centre (including Sculpture Plaza) is State Heritage listed

The sad thing is the location of the plaza. If the Parliament house isn't in the way, it could well be a popular meeting location no doubts about that.

Due to its 'inaccessibility', restricted by the Parliament house, it is pretty much hidden away from North Terrace. The Melbourne's Federation Square is located at junction, adjacent to the Flinders Station, with nothing in its way, no heritage building blocking the wide open area, which makes it one of the most popular meeting point in Melbourne.

We cannot basically achieve that with the Festival Plaza, no matter how much you invested in redeveloping the existing infrastructure.

This is a very disappointing outcome of the drought, and one that I don't understand, as fountains recycle water anyway. Perhaps it's a public perception thing? It looks like the councils are conserving water by shutting off the fountains, but in fact they were not using much anyway?

Fountains actually suffer from a high level of evaporation and they are constantly needing to be topped up with fresh water. This is the same reason that the lake in Rymill Park has been filled in... because it is shallow and not a dense body of water, it too evaporates quickly.

I don't think its as inaccessable as you say. After walking around the area yesterday, i can say that the area has clear access from North Terrace, King William Street together with the Casino & Riverbank Precinct.

Whilst there are question marks over the heritage listing of the 'art' & the load bearing limits of the plaza, when it comes to redeveloping this area, never say never...

Rymill Park Lake I can understand - but the surface water area of a fountain cannot be compared to that. The water feature at the "Entrance to Adelaide" at the Tollgate Junction has a very small pool at the bottom - or are you saying that the water is evaporating as it is falling?

The fountain which you speak of was switched off long ago. It's just not water efficient these days.

I know it was switched off long ago - I see it every day. It looks even more like a urinal now than it did with the water running down it. Instead of saying "Welcome to Adelaide" (how it said that I have no idea)it is now telling visitors to "Piss on Adelaide". Turn it back on or tear it down - it's fugly.
cheers,
Rhino
