So basically you've never travelled on the Adelaide Hills Line, minus a short section of it. Have you travelled on the SG freight line which you are proposing running trains on? I have - infact I have travelled the entire Adelaide-Melbourne route twice.
If you want to experience it - go for a trip on GSR's Overdue to Murray Bridge and get the bus back.
OK, ok, went on The Overdue as you put Somebody, but that was ages and ages ago. anyway it no even worth the $20 to go the Murray Bridge.

To put it simply, it would not be viable, and some places are best serviced by bus, and some are best serviced by heavy rail. The Adelaide Hills are the former.
Somebody, you prefer to stand the whole way from Mt Barker then for the whole 1hr trip?
So, Somebody what would you then to vastly improve the mediocre services in the Hills?

What's that got to do with anything

More buses.
A train running every 30 minutes along an indirect & windy route would still provide a worse service than a bus running every 30 minutes along a fairly direct freeway route, as present.
The Gold Coast - Australia's centre for insipid, tacky & boring.

Plenty, because a slightly more direct rout to Mt Barker would reduce travel times, then if re-alignment of the entire route was possible to travel time would be reduced again.
PLus, anyway as the forum suggest: Visions and Suggestions - it is a suggestion.

The main priority for the Adelaide Hills line is BY FAR not passenger services, but freight. It's a steeply graded & windy line, which is much worse for a 1.5km long Melbourne-Perth superfreighter with 4 locomotives than it is for a 2-car railcar.
There have been various proposals over the years to bypass it - I wonder if the proposed bypass via the Barossa Valley would be a good option. It'd be significantly longer in kilometres, but it would be a mostly straight, quick and flat run compared to the present dog leg. One comparison from NSW would be that all freight heading west takes a 200km diversion via Moss Vale, Goulburn & Cootamundra instead of the old "main" line through Penrith, Katoomba & Bathurst in order to avoid the steep grades and windy alignment through the Blue Mountains - supposedly it's faster!

Actually, it's 45 minutes on the express. And, yes, there needs to be more express buses, especially during the day and a few on weekends.

Bus lanes down AtD and Cruise's driveways!
We still haven't found a proper topographic map have we? Shuz sent us to the AtlasSA, even though I click on "topgraphic" there wasn't any contour info to judge grade from.
Do we have to visit a library?

Just use Google Earth or Google Maps with Terrain view.

^^ You can't get gradients off Google Maps. Just shades of grey, really.

What's Terrain view then? It shows each rise above sea level in 10m increments, which is close enough if you ask me...

BZZZZZT! little black smudges do not tell us terrain info, we need contours with metre marks on them.
like this, but better quality if possible.
I found an online resource with contours, but it's no where near clear enough to get gradient info from.
