And comparisons with Melbourne are often valid here, including in this thread.

I would of expected that you would of come up with the idea of undergrouding the busway by now Aidan. :D

I'm way ahead of you - I came up with it over a year ago. If you look on the Not Investigated section of my Investigation Project website, you'll see it includes a bus tunnel under Rundle Mall.

But we won't be able to afford it any time soon, and it's not something we urgently need. Therefore I didn't think it was worth mentioning on this thread.

What car park empties on to Grenfell Street in the illustration has not already been covered by monotonehell or myself?

I don't know how or why, but yesterday I had a random rethink of AtD's idea of reconfiguring Grenfell Street. It involves the following:

- Converting the existing westbound lanes to eastbound lanes on Grenfell and Currie Street between Pulteney Street and Light Square and making it one way only for regular traffic.
- Converting the existing eastbound lanes into the bus lanes in both directions on the north side of both Grenfell and Currie Streets
- Converting Pirie Street into one way traffic, westbound.
- Currently when you think about it, the road is actually wide enough for 6 lanes including the parking and bus lane. The equivalent of 4 lane would be taken up for the buses and the other 2 for the regular eastbound traffic.

What do people think?

Wow, that's almost the same idea that I've had. See page 2 of this thread:
Westside wrote:I think the simplest solution would be to make Currie/Grenfell one-way, Eastbound only to private traffic (2 lanes) between Morphett and East Tce. This would allow for a bus lane each way and still retain bays for the bus stops (so Eastbound and Westbound buses can still pass each other without entering the flow of traffic). You would still retain parking on one side of the street. Then make Waymouth/Pirie one-way, Westbound (2 lanes) between Morphett and East Tce - still retaining parking on one side of the street.

Then with just a simple readjustment of the major intersections inbetween (ie Morphett, King William, Pultney, East Tce) and allow a few more one way streets to link between Currie/Grenfell and Waymouth/Pirie and Bob's your uncle.

Thoughts??
Great minds think alike!

Your King William Street intersection seems very strange. Where right turns are banned, and left turns are either banned or have a separate lane, why would you want Barnes Dance crossings? And why does a northbound lane disappear at the intersection when there's nowhere for its traffic to go?

Re: Scramble crossings, cause I like them! But you're probably right, it's not really necessary there.
Re: Northbound lanes, I just copied what is already there and forgot to go back and edit that bit. :?

I stuffed up King William St. It's a seam on the Google Earth image which I used as the basis of the road widths so its looks lopsided. There should be three lanes southbound.

As AtD made his own 'lane proposal' earlier, we could deem that most drivers, under any circumstances should NEVER unnecessarily encroach onto those bus lanes!

I couldn't run my days in the city properly if the buses are always late!
