The former, although the jury's out on the latter given the spelling issues regarding 'fantastic'.

Isn't a new casino part of the plan. I really hope it is.

It looks silly to me, like they've plonked a bunch of vote buyers onto a Google Earth image with no regard to what's existing (the Gaol) or how it'd interact with anything.

Far from a vote changer IMO.

I was in the process of writing my own reply before I found this one. It pretty much sums up my thoughts about this plan:
Astro from RailSA wrote:All I can see with this plan are distractions, and underlying those, problems.

For starters, the gaol is gone...? And wouldnt the covering over of the interstate rail line affect possible load heights, particularly if the Adelaide - Melbourne line were upgraded for double stacking? And if an interstate train is in, does that not impede access to the Suburban terminus (it would appear so, given the supposed platform ends illustrated - it also appears that trains approaching from Melbourne will have to go past the station and reverse in).

I am pleased to see that they've finally realised they cant fit all of that onto the small space available, however the loss of old Adelaide Gaol in favour of a velodrome (of which the one we have works quite well) does concern me, and replacing a newly rebuilt and expanded Entertainment Centre with a new one seems very irresponsible. The convention spaces are split by a whole range of other obstacles, and the architectural undertaking would be epic in proportion to get all of that suspended above the railway tracks with adequate ventilation still worked in.

It is very popularist though, it plays to the public's hang ups about entertainment, but for me personally its hard to justify spending big on all of this then skimping medical facility spending down to a 'patch-up'. It also doesnt really add much to Adelaide, apart from about 3 hotels: the plan looks great, but it seems to hinge on just replacing what are currently good, workable facilities with new versions of them for no apparent good reason than shifting them. At least a medical research centre would add value to the state. I've never been a real fan of this plan though, and this just seals the deal for me.
While I will admit that some aspects of this plan have merit, like the redevelopment of the North Adelaide Golf Course, the rest seems unnecessarily extravegant and reeks of desperation. I also tend to agree with what Prince George posted back when the Sketch Up version of this plan was first revealed:
Prince George from Sensational Adelaide wrote:"For too long Adelaide has been considered a backwater" drones the monotone voice, chanting that same trite line that's been heard I-don't-know-how-often before. But what they show us is a backwater plan. Stadiums, conference facilities, casinos, hotels, it's like a grab-bag of the ideas that desparate towns cling to.

:applause: :applause: Brilliant.....Amazing, even if it all doesn't eventuate immediately, at least they have a vibrant and exciting plan for the city.

whilst I love the concept my biggest concern is that it just won't happen

while the cyncial people (like the above poster) say its a desperate attempt by a small town to look big if this is actually completed it is the sign of a small town being comfortable its iself.

I've been to many small cities who have done things like this that have worked and don't reek of desperation but more a sense of confidence.

Ambition is a wonderful thing and I really wish this "vision" was true but I can't help think yep vote grabbing and as soon as the election is over this will slowly die the inevitable death it has coming. Colour me cynical but I can't see this happening any time soon and putting together a few colourful flyers doesn't instill a lot of confidence in me.

Don't get me wrong I'd love this for our city but there are visions and then there are commercial realities. I feel that if this were a vialble proposal hotel and casino providers would already be putting in applications to for this kind of development. But there aren't any and that tells us something.

If the liberals do get in I sincerely hope they prove me wrong.
