The Minister for Planning and Infrastructure, Alannah MacTiernan, says the Perth to Mandurah train line is a step closer with the opening of Perth's new underground train stations this morning.

The metro-rail project has been plagued by delays and cost blow outs, and saw the shutdown of some services last week so power cables could be connected.

Ms MacTiernan has warned that may continue with fewer trains than normal on the Joondalup this morning as it becomes the first to take passengers through the tunnels under the CBD to the William Street and Esplanade stations instead of the existing City station.

"We're anticipating that they'll be back on track, we may not have a full suite of services on the Joondalup line," she said.

"I mean we'll be having trains running but school's not back til Tuesday and we're pretty confident that we'll have it restored by Tuesday.

Whats the point of building a underground network in Adelaide when our population is going to stay under 2 million?
Yeah maybe chuck out a few concepts to get a debate going, to then look at building one in 10 to 15 years, but it would be useless without a bigger population

Perth hasn't built an underground network and neither will we (at least not for a long time). All we want is one or two lines in or around the city square mile so trains can either loop back or go through without coming to a terminus.

Underground lines to places like Norwood/Kensignton Gardens or Glen Osmond, on the higher side of Adelaide, can wait until we have a larger or more dense population.

Good to see it's not exclusively a South Australian problem.

And Perth only has a population of 1.4 million and is one of the most isolated cities in the world. Bonn, a city of 200,000 in Germany (population density like in Adelaide), has an underground with over 8 stations. Even its southern suburb Bad Godesburg has an underground of 3-4 stations and its about 15 min away from the town centre, and it has an underground!

People do not believe me when i say Adelaide has no underground, their response is: 1million, how do people get around town then, if its by car and bus then your roads must be packed 24-7. Does Brisbane have an underground??

Yes and no. None of the three central area stations in Brisbane are underground, although both Brunswick Street and Central have been covered over with buildings. There are tunnels linking these stations though, between Central and Roma Street and then again between Central and Brunswick Street.

Personally I don't see why Adelaide couldn't support an underground network with lines into the suburbs.
Think about it, buses, trains, the trams, they are all packed. People WANT to use public transport, but there is a lack of services and were there are services they basically suck.
Cost would be huge, but I think could be managed if done in stages with a mix of state, federal and private funding.

But as with most things in Adelaide, the thought of an underground network(let alone one station), is a pie in the sky idea, given the lack of vision we are plagued with.

I personally like Normans rail vision. Not only is it great and will provide such easy access, it is also not that expensive to implement as it seems.

Considering most of the services will be operating via the corridors we have now, and the rest are just simply cut n cover the roads, which could occur over a longer period. I mean we are digging up roads as we speak (south road, henley beach road with more to possibly come), so it would be fesable, even for this state. Also converting the o-bahn wouldnt be such a choir.

The only major expense would be the heavy rail line passing through the city. However that could be investigated further and maybe modified if needed.

I think Norman should be our minister of transport heheh.

Adelaide - still the only Mainland State Capital without a freeway or a subway...

Nah, we already have the Southern Expressway, Port River Expressway and you just about say the South Eastern Freeway especially with Stirling-Aldgate-Bridgewater being like outer suburbs of Adelaide.
