T&G Buildings around Australia

#1 Post by Will » Fri Jul 06, 2007 3:58 pm

Like many large companies in its time, the T&G company, erected imposing buildings around Australia to highlight the prestige of the company. Many buildings were erected throughout Australia, including some in regional centres. The T&G company like the CML company designed their buildings using a similar style. The buildings in major capital cities look similar (Brisbane & Adelaide), whereas those in important regional centres like Hobart & Geelong also share similarities. Furthermore those in small regional cities also share similarities (Horsham & Mildura). Thankfully many of these buildings still survive to this day.

Great thread. I really like the Sydney T&G Building, that's a stunner.

Yes it is beautiful. In fact I just visited Emporis to find out more info on it, but to my shock, it appeared that the building was demolished in 1978. The Sydney T&G Building was built in 1930, and was the tallest building in Sydney between 1930-1939.

In addition, the Perth T&G Building was re-clad in 1996, and now has a more modern façade. Although not many people find them attractive, late 1950's style modern façades are significant for their contribution to the transition from the pre-war neo-classical and neo-gothic styles to the modern, international and brutalist styles of today.

I never knew about this, interesting...

The one in Mildura really looks nice in the CBD, fascinating to see a street scape picture aswell.

Theres a T&G clock tower at Albury aswell.

Thanks for the reminder about the T&G Building in Albury. I knew that I had missed one.
