Forum Modifications

I was just wondering what people thought of the idea to implement a base model for all thread titles to be indexed upon?

It would enable much easier filtering, searching and traversing through the forums to finding a thread as it would be identified by a proportionate set of characteristics which would be easily identifiable once found.

So for each respective 'project' I propose the such.

#U/C: Building Site Name and/or Address, Height, Levels Above Ground , Usage.

#U/C: 374-400 King William Street, 47m, 11lvl, Office.
#APP: Spire Living, 107m, 37lvl, Residential.

To consider other projects of development interests, eg: Adelaide Oval, North Terrace, the works in question should be adressed after the site name or location.

#PRO: Adelaide Oval, Western Grandstand Redevelopment.
#U/C: North Terrace, Streetscape Upgrades Stage 3.

In the event of multi-building projects, eg: The Precinct and City Central. There should be a base thread for 'site masterplan' updates in which the first post is linked to an individual thread of the relevant building(s) in question. These should be identified with a different symbol. The masterplan thread should be simply adressed, as per example.

    [ City Central ]
    [ The Precinct ]

And at the time when specific building(s) is being undertaken the thread should be addressed with the masterplan title incorporated into the standard project format.

    #REJ: Tower Eight, 72m, 19lvl, Office. [ City Central ]
    #U/C: The Gallery, 28m, 8lvl, Residential. [ The Precinct ]

Building statuses to be formatted as proposed?

    #U/C: Under Construction
    #APP: Approved
    #PRO: Proposed
    #U/R: Under Renovation
    #REJ: Rejected
    #DEF: Deferred
#SWP: Demolition, Preparation, etc: (Site Works in Progress)

I believe that it would greatly enhance the experience in traversing the forums and searching. The adoption of this or another model (if agreed by a majority of members) would be beneficial for all, guests included with its simple manageable model-based system?

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum, didn't expect the response to be so quiet (Thanks Norm!). Maybe it'd help if a mod/admin moved thread to Pub section for more publicity? Even though it is website related... :P

It's had over 114 views. I guess people don't care enough to agree, or disapprove at all.

So for the five of us who seem to think its a good idea - considering they don't care much for it. And then theres 120 others who have reviewed the idea, but haven't argued against it's recommendations, I think it's safe to implement it?

Howie - your call.

When i read the title forum modifications i thought you were thinking of making changes to the codebase in order to customize it for our site.. phew thank god it ain't that. :D

I'm cool with the above... i'll try to get through them one at a time when I get a chance, i'll get a couple of the other mods to help out if they're free too.

Does ~ next to something mean it hasn't been confirmed?

^^ Yes good question.

I rather like the way you've made status a three letter abbreviation : e.g. PRO for proposed, APP for approved, etc. It gives a bit more space for details.

Ben, you're right. The ~ means either unconfirmed, or guesstimate.

Howie - that was the intention, to allow for more spacing in the titles. However, hasn't resolved my 20 hindmarsh sq title - had to abbreviate it right down to 20HS.

All we need is a different format for the title listing.

Take the current format for example, we have the title/subject headings, the line belows shows who created the topic, time and date.

We don't need all that, it should be re-arranged into, Topic/Subject Headings, the line below should be description.

So instead of the current format:

#U/C: Aurora on Pirie | 54/57m | 14/15lvls | Office
by Ben on Fri Dec 23, 2005 1:19 pm 1 ... 25, 26, 27

It could be:
Aurora on Pirie | 54/57m | 14/15lvls | Office
Under Construction

Name of creator/date/time can be added in the following column.

Unfortunately that isn't possible due to software restrictions. I haven't seen a forum personally that has multi-line topic headings.

The topic creator name is standard by default.

However, how about making topic icons to reflect their current status, just like Bus Australia did:

Some of these acronyms aren't very intuitive, and coming from a public servant, that's saying something... (Department of Acronyms?).

Perhaps a note in the first page of the 2008 Construction thread, explaining the meaning, as it's a sticky and probably the first place people go.

I was thinking of a sticky too. But i think we can adjust to the new abbreviations.

Edgar, I've seen that on some of the car forums i've been on, but really not wanting to customise any of the code in phpbb forum software, as it makes patching a nightmare.
