It certainly wasn't a Singapore Flyer or London Eye, that's for sure

The whole beach-house is a waste of space but that wheel especially so. If it was twice as tall or on the jetty it would be more interesting, but as is it's entirely pointless.

That ferris wheel was a blight on the fucking landscape. Good riddance.

Is is still possible to bypass paywall? :x
I want to read that article about that single arm ferris wheel.
For starters, my avatar is the well-known Adelaide Aquatic Centre insignia from 1989.

I want to read that article about that single arm ferris wheel.
THE life of Glenelg’s ill-fated beachside Ferris wheel is coming to an end a decade after its opening.

Holdfast Bay Council has given the attraction’s owner, Peter Rimington, until September 8 to dismantle the wheel; one week after the end of his lease agreement for land next to the Beachouse.

But Mr Rimington told CoastCity Weekly he hoped to continue leasing the site for a different purpose, and would approach the council with his idea in the coming weeks.

“I’m looking at doing something that continues the lease but it may not be a ferris wheel,” he said.

Mr Rimington would not provide any other details.

The $1.8 million, 25m-tall ferris wheel opened in 2008.
Following low popularity, it was sped up from one rotation every nine minutes to one every six in 2009.
The Ferris wheel when the gondolas were actually operating.

Then in 2011 the Ferris wheel’s salt-damaged glass windows were replaced with plastic ones and the rotations were boosted again to one every four minutes.
It closed in 2016 for improvements — including repairing corrosion damage to the gondolas — but never reopened.

Jetty Road Mainstreet Committee chairman Mark Faulkner said he was glad to see plans for the site moving forward.

“It’s a shame to lose something like that but The Beachouse needs to be generating income and if they aren't, that’s part of a business decision,” Mr Faulkner said.

“It either had to be fixed up and working or it had to go.”
Passers-by last week had mixed reactions about knocking the attraction down.
“We’ve had a Ferris wheel in Glenelg for a long time, so it’s a shame,” Kath Duval, of West Beach, said.

Glenelg resident Kay, who did not want her last name printed, said she would be happy to see the back of the Ferris wheel.
“It’s an eyesore as it is — I think they need to do something about it,” she said.
“I think it would make the area look nicer (if it was gone).”
This is how to do a ferris wheel properly — it’s the world’s biggest

Glenelg ward councillor Bob Patton agreed.

“It doesn’t appear to go higher than the buildings,” Mr Patton said.
“It hasn’t been a success.”
Mr Rimington’s business Rimhart Nominees leases the site for $17,500 per year.
Holdfast Bay’s city activation manager Marnie Lock said the community could have a say on the future use of the Ferris wheel site — and other open community spaces in the area — as part of the council’s 2018 Open Space and Public Realm Strategy review.

Residents have until April 18 to fill out a survey online at yourviewholdfast.com.

Anyone read the latest piece by know it all teen Caleb Bond?
Apparently the public should get a say on buildings proposed for the CBD now.
Because the public are experts you see...like over in Perth, where they opposed a proposal for a building comprised of two towers, because...get this...they'd be targets for terrorists flying planes into them.

Yes Caleb, lets give the average Mary and Joe a say on whether something gets built or not.
No wonder he's excelled at The Advertiser, he's as out of touch with reality as the rest of their "writers".

He's 17 and a professional political commentator receiving praise from all the authority figures in his life, why would he second guess anything he writes?

Back when I used to read the paper we got at work, I believe they used to(may still have it) a column for a couple high schoolers to write an opinion piece. He was one of them. Obviously landed a job through that.

I’m not going to pick on him too much because bullying is a **** of a thing, especially towards young people, and he’s been the victim of it I believe.

But who ever is mentoring him is failing him.
Buildings going up in the city/cbd aren’t like your neighbor in the suburbs adding a second storey with big windows looking over into your back yard.

Apparently he’s a conservative? Never got that impression from his opinion pieces/articles.
The former labor government made progress in development and growth in Adelaide. One measure was to remove planing powers from the city council for developments over $10 million.
Liberals get in power. City council starts complaining it wanfs it’s powers back. Local tabloid rag with an anti-labor pro-liberal lean pushes agenda against the progress/changes made by labor.
