*** INTERMISSION *** (cue elevator music)

Anybody know what's up with the mobile crane party on the parade grounds today? Rode past on the way to work, and it looked like 25–30 odd cranes all hanging out together.
That's a lot of cranes... is it the seeds of a revolution? The cranes are taking over! *panics*

GHS you do realise Holdens is or was an unit of an American Company GM.

Does it not make sense to see thousands of South Australian earn that little extra driving for Uber which in turn stimulates the economy rather than focusing on what country the profits are going to making a small group of people benefit.

Parc Arcade is nearly dead.
I'm afraid there's little we can do to give it more life.
It has suffered a huge blight throughout the years.
Sometimes, you can't bring anything old up to today's standards.

It will likely benefit from the Gawler Place upgrade though so there might be hope for it yet.

Not sure if she still is, but last decade the owner of the building (and landlord) was impossible to deal with. She chased away any tenants she could convince to move in. She constantly harassed the UPark with petty disputes about the cashier's station near the lifts, to the point where it relocated to the top of the first ramp for a year. Which was silly as that killed all her foot traffic. Most of the shops in there are fake shops (anything "Raw") that she has set up so it doesn't look dead. There's a whole lower ground to that arcade that is empty and succumbing to the underground environment and rubbish that blows in through the grills. (Including a rumoured last century cinema.)

Parc Arcade is a result of its own management.

Lower ground hey. Where is the access to this?

Sounds like a great place for a Halloween event...

I've always wondered what was down those grated-off stairs on Stephen's Place. Anyone ever been inside? What's the story behind the cinema?

It would be disgusting. Rats and so on have free reign.

Stephens Place side. The shutter above the planter opens a window (no glass) that over looks the stairs going down. The entrance is the shutter on the street side. The sewing center used to be this end iirc.

Gawler Place side, not so sure but I think this is the entrance to the escalators.

There's also an entrance using the stairs right of the lifts. This is gated with a mesh fence.

Many moons ago old father talks of a before time... before the downstairs arcade was shuttered. Used to be a sewing centre and some other specialty shops down there when I was a kid. I've never seen the cinema, that was way before my time.

There was never a cinema in Parc Arcade... Don't know where you heard that.

Never say never. ;) This is why I said "rumoured". Several people who worked for the council independently told me of its existence. I once had a key to the gates. But it was very much out of bounds due to complete darkness and whatever lives down there now, so I never used it. I asked me ol' dad and he seemed to recall one. But I suspect he's confused with the York. So I can neither confirm or disprove its existence.

Are you positive?

I recall "something" down there, in the early 80's, but I cant remember exactly what.

I do however have a vivid memory of the donut shop smell that filled the whole arcade..... :D

Wait, there was a Cotton On Kids in Regent Arcade? Had no idea, we always go to the kids section of the main store.
Grenfell St frontage, between the Propaganda Club and Red Cross.......

The cinema was in the basement of the building - from memory, it was the Regent 3 - or part of the Regent cinemas. We went to see a movie there years ago, only to find it had been closed for some time.

I'm speaking as someone who has worked in the cinema industry for quite a few years and also has a hobby of archiving everything in regards historic cinemas of Adelaide, there was never cinema below that arcade. Regent 1 and 2 were both in a singular shell (still existent) attached to the Regent Arcade (common knowledge), and Regent 3 was the original cinema previously occupied by Globalize etc - I believe that closed a few years before Regent 1 and 2 because of its size. It doesn't make any sense why would Hoyts Regent have a cinema nearly 200m away from their other cinemas. All of that said, I'm more than happy to stand corrected on this if anyone has anything other than hearsay on this... In fact, it would make my hobby far more interesting.

I have walked in the old cinema under parc arcade (around 4 years ago). It is a huge area down there and the sloping floor of the cinema still is there. We were looking at the area for commercial space. I think they may be looking at a karaoke and pool room bar now.

It's a bit hard to track down, and possibly not well remembered, but ...
ADELAIDE Hoyts Cinema 3 1972 Closed
Alternative Names -> Mid City
Cinema c1983
Street Address -> Rundle Arcade, 7 Gawler Place
http://www.caths.org.au/venues/SA.pdf

My memory of Regent 3 branding may simply be faulty.
