#Supporting Victoria Park Development Petition Thread

#1 Post by Howie » Fri Dec 14, 2007 8:58 pm

For legal reasons can you refrain from mentioning groups such as the Adelaide Parklands Preservation group. Let's try to keep this thread clean.

Image
The rejection of the proposed Victoria Park grandstand by the Adelaide City Council as a result of a vocal campaign by nostalgic minorities is a backwards step for Adelaide and South Australia as a whole. It is a short-sighted decision based on fear and not reason.

The Victoria Park grandstand is a visionary project designed to provide permanent and superior facilities for the award winning Clipsal 500 event. Such a project would enhance our competitiveness in being able to retain if not bid for more world class events, which add to the vitality but also to the economy of our state.

Furthermore the proposed grandstand would facilitate the renaissance of Victoria Park into a premier horse racing venue, something which the under-utilized and tired facilities of today are incapable of achieving. The Victoria Park grandstand would allow Adelaide to put its best foot forward.

A permanent structure on the parklands is not a threat to our unique parklands, but rather an enhancement. Had it not been for similar visionary projects, we would not have Adelaide Oval, the zoo, Adelaide University, the Museum and Art Gallery amongst many other structures built on the parklands, which have become valued additions to our city. The proposed Victoria Park grandstand is no different.

As such, I as a progress-loving citizen of Adelaide or to the state of South Australia hereby declare my full and un-wavering support for the Victoria Park re-development in its full and original form.

You can add SSC to that list, Howie. :)

Whwhwhat? Are you saying they've threatened legal action against us or something? :?

Not that I care really, the least we talk about them the better :D.

PM me if you want to talk more about it. I can't really discuss anything here.

Do you think it would be good emailing the link around the various councils (other then the ACC ofcourse and perhaps a couple of other councils who have made their positions clear) and see what we get from the various councilors/mayors? Certainly get a good idea as to what percentage of the city wants the grandstand built.

Up to 337 signatures. A bit slower progress in the last few days than I had hoped.
To those managing the petition support through other sites, hows things on other fronts, eg: SSC, SSL, Railpage, Myspace, Facebook?

The petition seems to have slowed. Are there any ideas to increase its exposure?

get some exposure out of the internet world (read: newspaper, flyers, etc).

You can get a lot more exposure and support from members of the public who do not participate in forums, remember, not everyone is a forumer.
Visit my website at http://www.edgarchieng.com for more photos of Adelaide and South Australia.

How about sticking flyers up in the city?

Do you have to get council consent for that? I might do a mockup poster.

I'm not sure. but bands, clubs or people with lost pets put posters up around light and stobie poles all the time

It seems the petition has died down, only 391 signatures to date.
I was really keen for this to get off the ground. I'm just wondering what the best way for us to maximise its potential to make it a successful cause?

In last Sunday's, Sunday Mail, in the last page of the sports section, Chris McDermott wrote an article in full support of the Victoria Park Grandstand. He has included his e-mail: [email protected]

If you have a copy of the Sunday Mail (December 23, 2007), I strongly suggest you read his article on pg.74

Maybe he should be contacted, and made aware of our petition. He seems very passionate about this issue, and I am quite sure that he may include our petition in a future article.
