How walkable is your neighbourhood?

#1 Post by Prince George » Mon Sep 15, 2008 11:41 pm

http://www.walkscore.com/ has been around for a while, but now it seems to work better for Australian locations. You give it a location, it does a local search for businesses in various categories nearby and the walk score is roughly a count of all the ones in a certain straight line distance. This ignores things like whether it's hard to cross a road, or the times that the walking distance is much further than the straight line distance, but you still get a decent idea of how local services are to that location.

As you might expect, areas like Glenelg and Norwood get high scores (about 85%), and recent suburbs like Mawson Lakes and Golden Grove get woefully low scores (in the 20s). In their defence, the search doesn't seem to know about the things that are available in Golden Grove Village or Mawson Lake Town Centre (how many other towns have a "centre" that's so far over to one edge?). On the other hand, they would be areas where there's a big difference between the as-the-crow-flies and actual walking distances.

My area got 42... not bad.

Adelaide got 98, while Melbourne only got 95 :D

Sydney got 98, Perth 92, Brisbane 100 ( ), Darwin 6, Gold Coast 35 ( ), Hobart 97 ( ) and Canberra 89.

a few mistakes in my area (Torrens Park - 55%). Seems "Mitcham Square" is not very well documented in google maps...
* Cinema is only ~400m away, tool says 3.5km
* Chemist is only ~400m away, tool says 2km
* Clothing stores only ~400m away, tool says 2km

But then i suppose i could go into google maps and update the info, nah...

ah well - 28 for my local, but considering I am a 4 minute walk from belair national park i would have classed that as VERY walkable, guess the Americans behind that page do not share my taste in walking. For me being able to walk just minutes and be in a "wilderness" is a big plus - beats walking the suburbs for money - and there is also a Country Club in Belair and a Caravan Park - doesn't that count for anything!!!

Interesting. St Peters (Payneham Rd side) for my area got 78/100
Although St Peters (river Torrens end) would prob be much lower

My address in Mawson Lakes got 26, but when you have a look at the list of facilities that it bases it on, half of the closer ones in Mawson Lakes are missing!

Doesn't show my area :( , though if it did it would be 10/100

Not surprising my old area of Unley rated 71.

20 out of 100 for Beaumont, but severely inaccurate. And what about Darwin? ...'6'?
