I've been neglecting my turn, so I present this:

This building got an award of merit from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects in 1980, so it must be a looker, right?

...right???

Going by the Uni Bar logo on plaque above I'm guessing the Adelaide University Union building

That's an easy one. It's the Hungry Jacks car park.

Nicely done, sir.
What the hell were they thinking in 1980?

It's worse when you consider what was demolished to build the carpark.

I'd love to know what on earth the criteria was to justify an Award of Merit for that carpark. For the life of me, I cannot think of anything unique, distinctive or clever about it. Probably they were drunk.

The old building was the Grand Central Hotel. It was out of date and wasn't making any money as a hotel, and would not have been economical to upgrade. That's a common position with 'lovely old buildings'.

As to the award, remember that it is awarded by architects to architects. The structure of the carpark was innovative for the day; a lightweight steel frame supporting concrete floors.

I know where it is, in the UniSA City West, but does anyone know what it is, who put it there, and if it serves any purpose apart from public art - hide a substation or hydrant pump, perhaps?

When I went to uni there I read the plaque on the wall nearby. It's a time capsule IIRC.

Wish they could squeeze the Hindley St. substation in there... some sculpture students last year printed real estate signs advertising 'great security!' and 'ideal for first home buyer!'. I think the brick is a reference to the 3 little pigs and City West needing a large footprint.
