How to spot spamers

#1 Post by AtD » Wed Oct 20, 2010 9:43 pm

My my they're getting clever these days! I've just gone though and cleaned out another two that went though unnoticed.

Some spammers appear to be... stupid people. If you were online this afternoon you'll know what I'm talking about.

How to spot spammers in the forum:
- Obviously, obscure links. Some don't appear for a few days after they've posted, usually in the signature line.
- Spammers like to dig up old threads with meaningless replies.
- Try Googling some of their text. Some bots will copy/paste from the web in an attempt to look like a person with something to add.
- Trailing numbers in the username are a clue.
- Anyone else have any hints?

If you see non-obvious spam, feel free to hit the 'report post' button.

Also:
Make sure your password is secure.
Don't have a one word password! Include upper case, lower case and numbers.

(I don't have any evidence that any of the spam accounts were once owned by real people, but it's better to be safe than have all your posts from all time deleted)

Crawf, would you mind editing that post so they aren't actually links - no sense risking that we accidentally send business their way.

nah the links are trustable.

I clicked one and it told me that I could get a job that pays $3000 a day if I sent in my credit card details. Knowing that this is an offer that comes once in a lifetime, I just couldn't refuse :D I sent in my credit card details, paid them a $560 deposit, gave them my email-address and they told me that they'll get back to me.
