Getting Started
Setup
- Install Google Earth.
- Install Google Sketchup.
- Install the Network Link (this will enable you to download objects from the 3D warehouse).

Building
- Nominate a building to work on that someone else isn't doing (see list above)
- Navigate to where it should be under Google Earth, switch terrain off, then open SketchUp and grab the Google satellite pic (button close to the rhs).
- Build your 3D object (when scaling, it only accepts feet, so e.g. Santos instead of being 135m is 443ft, you can input this figure in directly).
- Last step before uploading it into the warehouse, go back to google earth, switch terrain back on. Then elevate it to the appropriate height.
- Then click share model (button close to rhs), give it a name (e.g. Myer (Adelaide) plus some information).
- Then use the Place in Google Earth button (close to RHS on sketchup).

From what I can see it doesn't appear on Google Earth natively. You have to install a thing call 3D Warehouse network link from the google earth page. Then it searches the database for objects that people have created. However, I haven't seen Santos. Howie, did you upload your model to the 3D warehouse database? If so, maybe I'm still doing something else wrong.

I thought I did. I did upload it into the warehouse.

But if it hasn't gone in yet, it's probably a good thing. It's not exactly to scale... still too wide, i'm working from photographs here. If only I can get the floor plan of Santos :S

I just realised if terrain is turned on it looks out of scale, switch it off again and it works.

hmmm...

Hey guys, delete your current objects... i've updated all the models for Grenfell, Hooker and Santos... and just added SA Water.

Image

You probably can't see from here, but grenfell has the oracle sign, and santos now has windows and the santos signage.

Come on all, we need more participants.. we've got alot of buildings to get through, even if you just made blocky as place holders and we can finish them up.

Yes, I know.. i'll have it on there shortly. I've also thrown up Hooker House update.. looks much more realistic now.

Mant's just give it a go buddy... the tutorial's are heaps easy to follow. It's not a full fledge cad program it's just a simple modelling tool. My first ones were really blocky but now i've moved onto more detail... after about the third building it gets much easier.
