Cher puts key to the City of Adelaide on eBay

AGEING diva Cher is selling her key to the city of Adelaide on eBay, infuriating the lord mayor who presented it to her.

Steve Condous yesterday voiced his disgust that the honour, which he presented to the singer and actress at the 1990 Adelaide Grand Prix, was up for sale.

"I think that's pretty poor," he told The Advertiser.

"I'm disappointed. I would have thought that getting the key to a city like Adelaide would have had some value to her, but obviously it doesn't because she wouldn't have got rid of it. I've been given a couple of keys to cities and I felt pretty privileged to be given those.

"If she didn't want to keep it she should have returned it back to the city."

The brass key and accompanying plaque is one of dozens of items being auctioned by Cher's personal consigner.

A total of 33 keys to the city of Adelaide have been handed out in the 22 years since Cher's visit.

Recipients include the Dalai Lama, former Governor Dame Roma Mitchell, comedian Barry Humphries and cyclist Lance Armstrong.

Cher's key had attracted just one bid of $120 late yesterday.

Bidding closes on Thursday.

Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said he was "exceptionally disappointed".

"I just think that it is more a reflection on her than the city of Adelaide," he said.

"It must be very embarrassing for her if she is selling it because she needs the money."
The auction on Ebay now has the key price at over $90,000 Australian

Well, the ACC only have themselves to blame for giving out such an honour to celebrities who actually haven't done anything meaningful for humanity.

I mean, can I get the keys to the city, if I ride a cannon wearing a mankini?

agreed, clearly someone was a fan back in the day.

gave it to the wrong person and this is what happens.

celebrities can be cashed up bogans just like anyone - do a background check next time.

Yeah that's a good point that you guys make about giving the Key to the city to a person who doesn't really
deserve it.

It surprises me that people are bidding so much money on ebay for it. Seriously most people in the U.S.
don't even know of Adelaide.

She's had the thing for 22 years, and is now auctioning it for charity. She will have 100's of things like this, who cares.

Yes, of course you can.

I would also pay good money to see that.

Selling the key to the city/any city is crass and disrespectful. Must have fallen on hard times! Or?

I can't understand why Cher was ever considered to be deserving of such an honour! There is a lesson in this for future Lord Mayors not to get sucked in by the cult of "celebrity" obsession.

Reserve the honour for those who genuinely contribute to the quality of life, social fabric or genuine achievement that contributes to the esteem in which the city is held. Not for some fleeting visit, performance or one off event.

Things like this & that completely ridiculous crowd in Rundle Mall for Boy George show how small minded Adelaide used to be. Thank goodness we've matured.

So how would you describe the reception for One Direction on the east coast?

I don't think "sports legend choosing Adelaide to end his international career" equates to "musician in the middle of a tour"
