Howard wants Cup for 2014

Prime Minister John Howard has backed a proposal to host football's World Cup in Australia in 2014.
The 2006 World Cup is now being played in Germany. The next World Cup will be in 2010 in South Africa.
Mr Howard said on Friday the proposal, from South Australian Premier Mike Rann, had merit as Australia had proved it could handle any major sporting event on the globe.
"There is no world event that is beyond the capacity of Australia to organise superbly," he told ABC radio.
"We are very good at it, we proved that in Melbourne in 1956, we proved it in Sydney in 2000, Melbourne again with the Commonwealth Games, and the very successful Rugby World Cup.
"And I'm sure, anywhere in Australia virtually, where there's a large population and the necessary infrastructure, we could do it."
Mr Howard said he would be happy to discuss the idea with Mr Rann at the next Council of Australian Governments meeting.
He said the proposal would have to be a national endeavour.
"As a matter of principle I'm certainly in favour of us looking at it, as a nation, it should be done on a national basis," he said.
Adelaide Bid to Host World Cup in 2014
This is a great idea, however being realistic I think the favourites to host the World Cup in 2014 are South America, and in particular Brazil.
Nevertheless it is good to place a bid in because then the chances of getting the world cup in 2018 will be greater.
And Australia is definately prepared to host the World Cup. The question is which stadium would Adelaide use? Hindmarsh is too small and AAMI Stadium is innapropriate for soccer.

Will's right, Brazil looks like a lock for 2014. As we're now considered part of Asia in football terms, it's unlikely the event will be held in Asia twice (after Korea/Japan in 2002) before heading back to South America, where it hasn't been since 1978.
But you never know, holding it here might appeal to FIFA, especially if the Socceroos make the 2nd round and football grows out of its skin in this country.
I think they'd re-configure and to some extent redevelop AAMI Stadium for it. There are plenty of football stadiums with athletic tracks around the pitch where the fans are as far away as they would be at AAMI, so whilst it's not ideal, they won't overlook the ground because of it. I'm sure they'd use the MCG rather than Docklands too.
Hindmarsh is way too small and doesn't have room to grow, they'd never make Adelaide Oval and all-seater as required by FIFA and we've got fuck all chance of getting a new stadium.
Good work to Mike Rann for leading the charge too.

Shirt, the rotation system has been scrapped, so technically asian confederation nations don't have to wait for the full cycle of other confederations before they get another turn.
That said, I don't think Australia should host the world cup. We don't deserve it.
The world cup means everything to European and South American countries. It's quickly becoming that way in Japan / South Korea and Africa. The event has the capacity to bring joy to so many more people, many in impoverished nations, than our spoiled nation of 20 million deserves. Why should we host the cup instead China or India?
That and it's hypocritical how everyone has suddenly jumped on the bandwagon. A year ago soccer was the hideous, bloody front of balkan nationalism in Australia. Now it's go socceroos eat weetbix, we're with you all the way. :wank:
Keep in mind that i'm actually a keen follower and player of the sport, so i'm not speaking with some xenophobic bias that ir particularly common in AFL fans. I just feel the sport and tournament demands more than Australia is capable of giving it.

New South Wales and South Australia are leading a bid to host the World Cup.
Premiers Morris Iemma and Mike Rann say they will put together a joint submission for the COAG meeting in July for Australia to host the 2018 World Cup.
Mr Iemma says the scenes of jubilation this morning are proof Australians have taken football into their hearts.
"We are very well-placed as far as the major events and we've got a team now that's in the top 16," he said.
Mr Rann says Western Australia, Tasmania and Victoria have already indicated support for the bid.
"What's happening at the very time the Socceroos are getting momentum, there's growing momentum for Australia to take another step up on the world sporting stage."
But Mr Iemma has ruled out allowing the final to be held at the MCG, saying it would be in Sydney at Homebush.

Completely agree with the rest of your post. The bandwagoners were doing my head in over the past 2 weeks.
Australia organises and hosts events with the best of them, but it just wouldn't have the same passion as it would in a traditional football country.
You only have to look at the commercialised wankfest that was USA 94 to see that.
