Old and New Adelaide

#1 Post by rhino » Tue Jul 29, 2014 10:17 am

I found this blend of old and new photos on ABC News online. It shows modern Adelaide (King William St looking south from Gouger Street) blended with a photo taken on the day the last Glenelg Train came up King William Street. The train line is the route of the current Glenelg Tram. There was also another Glenelg railway line which went straight to Adelaide Station - I believe that route is now a bike track.

Correct, it split off around where the Mile End Station is, along what is now James Congdon Drive and then the West Side Bikeway. When the government acquired both the North Tce/Glenelg and South Tce/Glenelg Lines, they ended up converting the South Tce line to trams, and shut down the North Tce line. The platform of the Plympton station can still be seen along Marion Rd.
