Academy Cinema to close
Re: Academy Cinema to close
Australia's Pizza House on Hindley Street has a arcade. I have been there a few times.
Its fun, but the times I have been there its been basically dead.
I guess it would get busy after school though.
I think their biggest problem is that all the games are old.

I think that this site deserves something that is quite upmarket - I'm thinking COH basically because of its location. Do we really need to have arcades and cinemas in the city? I live in the city and to tell you the truth, I couldn't care less if there is a cinema in the city. It is an excuse to get out in the burbs to watch a movie. Besides, these sort of 'entertainment' style arcades only attract emo's and the like anyway (just look at the park outside of Academy any afternoon of the week).

Palace Nova Cinemas are taking it over and adding to their existing cinema facilities. Now there is a Cinema that is in the city is successful. But they do have a point of difference.crawf wrote:It turned into a entertainment venue "Higher Ground", but plans have been proposed for site (can't remember what for)

1. the service and pizza was very bad... we waited like 25 mins for the pizza and the place was empty, the girl at the counter didnt know what the f*ck she was doing... her basic maths skills were appauling and honestly of a primary school level ....she did not know how to change a $20 note for "15 in notes and 5 in gold coins" and claimed we were confusing her and her job was too hard!
2. the games.... we played air hockey... and it was so shit, the air hardly worked, and the puck and the hitting things lol (what ever they're called) would hardly even move on the table.
had trouble with the daytona game also, as we couldnt race each other because only one would work on each the two sets of daytona's
never again shall i go back to that hole!

BMW boy. The galactic circus arcade in crown is a centre of collecting lots of teenagers and people in their early twenties. I was there about a month ago (just strolling around). There seemed to me to be more people loitering than playing games. Just so happens that every time i walk through that particular region of the crown complex in and around the food hall, i always feel uneasy....and almost always a fight amongst hot head teens breaks out!bmw boy wrote:
I thought the huge 'Galactic Circus' arcade in the Crown Casino Complex was pretty cool when i visited and includes a bowling alley and laser war challenge thingy (maybe one of our melbourne members could give an indication of it's popularity, success).
However, whatever gets developed in the said area in Adelaide needs to have a mix of upmarket entertainment and an element of attraction for late teen early twenties folk. I dont mind the Intencities at most of the major cinema complexes (more family friendly) however, i do like the idea of bowling alleys that are more bar/club oriented, good music, light snacks and provisions for alcohol. Some good retail stores that actually stay open at night, and lots of good food (in the form of cafes/restaurants) a Gold class section and perhaps a borders store...!
The possibilities are endless!

and let's not forget that the Adelaide CBD IS growing and modernising, very rapidly. I would say the number and scale of developments over the last 5 years or so in Adelaide far exceeds anything it has had in the last 20 years, and there's no sign of it slowing anytime soon!
This is a great credit to the current Adelaide city countil, as well as the state government.

It's sad to see the Academy close - it really was for a long time the best place to see a movie - it was the last time my whole family saw a movie together before we all grew up and moved out of home etc - memories of seeing many movies there from Empire to Police Academy to Shrek to T3.
Thanks for the memories Wallis - hope your plans for the suburbs works out.
BTW Wallis Mitcham opens this Friday.

Re: Academy Cinema to close
According to a media report last week, the site has been bought by the Hines group, developers of Domain appartments on Grenfell and the the very slow moving Conservatory on Hindmarsh. Based on that info dont expect anything to happen quickly!how_good_is_he wrote:Anyone know who actually bought the site?
