Ghs, every single time. Your OCD seems to get the better of you.

No need for that Dvious.Dvious wrote:Ghs, every single time. Your OCD seems to get the better of you.
I believe that I am one of the best contributors to this great website.
Why you are always so negative towards me I would never know.

Pedestrian walkway structure on Grote St looks almost done... Think this one might move pretty quickly from now.

Looking over the renders for this again, brings my attention to two things that drive me mad about Adelaide apartment building proposals.
The first, the choice in colours... Who thought that bright red would be a great choice for this building's cladding? The same person who thought bright orange and yellow would be appropriate for the apartments on the old Balfour site? It's tacky and doesn't age well.
The second, why do developers feel it as some kind of necessity to add retail space at the ground level to every apartment or office building? I understand that it may seem like useless space otherwise, but in parts of Melbourne for example they've actually found that adding small studio apartments at the ground level can be quite popular among students looking to buy or rent. In this part of Grote Street, I don't see any success for the sorts of retail this building hopes to attract - if you want a coffee or a meal, why wouldn't you walk the short distance to the Central Market? And obviously home decor stores don't work here either, otherwise why did Dream-Land vacate the site?

Isnt the 'mixed use' aspect of such tenancies done so in an effort to activate the interface between the building and the street? Assuming you dont want to be living in a store display, ground floor residencies are going to end up with a blank/solid wall along the street in order to achieve the desired level of privacy, which seems counter the principles of street level activation (which are hard to achieve as it is!).
Agree re the colours lol.

This is another typical Adelaide comment. The first, the choice in colours... Who thought that bright red would be a great choice for this building's cladding? The same person who thought bright orange and yellow would be appropriate for the apartments on the old Balfour site? It's tacky and doesn't age well.
1) We're not living in the 1970's anymore.
2) Buildings which are dull and have no colours don't age well either.
I like the red colour on the renders for Central Adelaide and I am looking forward to seeing it built.

Im with GHS. Nothing wrong with a bit of colour on a building if it is dont nicely.
Go look around Melbourne and some of their nicer apartment buildings all tender to have a splash of colour somewhere!

The piling rig at work in the North west (rear) corner as at 14 May 2015. At least work has actually started here, unlike U2.
