Hey peeps,

Was driving north on Hutt Street today, and saw a large crane set up just in from the corner of Hutt and Angas Streets.

Can anyone fill me in on which development this is? Thanks.

I was fairly upbeat about Adelaide's cranes till reading the following on the Urban Melbourne site
"MARK BALJAK WROTE ON FRI, 17/10/2014 - 06:18
still a poxy count, current Melbourne crane count is 117 - all time high.

>>> Cranes flocking over mainland city skylines

The inner-city apartment boom is making its mark on central business district skylines, as the number of cranes devoted to high-rise residential construction soars.

The number of cranes in mainland city skylines rose 5 per cent to 324 in September from 308 in March, underpinned by soaring residential construction in Melbourne.

The crane count, devised by Rider Levett Bucknall, and which the quantity surveyor has recently trademarked as a precursor to rolling out the half-yearly report in other countries, has become a handy index to gauge the strength of the construction sector.

Cranes in the Victorian capital rose to 93 in September from 61 in March. Twenty-nine were taken down and 61 erected in that time, the index shows.

Residential cranes jumped from 45 to 73, accounting for 78 per cent of all cranes in the city, up from 70 per cent in March."

Dog that made me laugh, I was in Melbourne a few weeks ago and it is noticeably booming there.

Ill see your Melbourne skyline and raise you this....................

Dubai has 30,000 construction cranes

Construction activity in the region is currently at its peak, resulting in a sharp rise in the demand for machinery.

Dubai: About 30,000, or 24 per cent of the world's 125,000 construction cranes, are currently operating in Dubai, according to the organisers of the Conmex construction machinery exhibition.

Demand for construction related machinery, equipment and vehicles is expected to continue rising in the Middle East, especially in the UAE, due to the continuing construction and real estate boom.

In 2003, the UAE's market for heavy construction machinery stood at $165 million, road construction machinery at $142 million and earth moving machinery at $125 million. The size has increased by 15-20 per cent since then.

Annual market demand for used machinery in the Middle East is valued at over Dh5 billion.

As of last April, there was almost $300 billion worth of projects underway in the UAE, according to a recently published report.

Although the concentration of construction activities in the UAE is in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the other emirates are not far behind.

"The entire GCC region, particularly the UAE, is currently attracting astronomical investments in the real estate and the construction sectors," said Saif Al Midfa, director-general of the Expo Centre Sharjah, the organisers of Conmex, the exhibition for construction machinery and equipment.

Conmex is being organised by the Expo Centre Sharjah with the support of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

"Construction activity in the region is currently at its peak as a result of which the demand for related machinery, equipment and vehicles is experiencing a sharp rise.

"The indications are that there will be no let-up in this trend," he added.

Dubai, which continues to be the centre of construction activities, has experienced an increase in real estate investment from Dh11 billion in 2000 to Dh165 billion now.

Multi-billion dirham projects are also under way in Abu Dhabi. The UAE capital is expected to spend Dh47 billion on construction related activities in the next two years.

Within the northern emirates, Sharjah has been at the helm of the construction frenzy.

The emirate recently committed Dh3.5 billion towards developing its infrastructure.

I think most will agree that we can't look at Dubai as an comparison for anything. They are artificially inflating all their statistics by injecting vast quantities of money without regard for demand and supply that the rest of the world needs to follow.
Exit on the right in the direction of travel.

Official CBD Crane Counter Thread - 9

#891 Post by Dog » Fri Nov 07, 2014 7:15 pm

I actually think Adelaide is doing OK, obviously not in the Melbourne or Dubai league but I can remember a decade without any cranes or very little. Surprising to note besides Tasmainia, Qld, and Victoria all had higher unemployment than Adelaide last month. And although we always run ourselves down in terms of Growth against other Australian cities we have Stella growth compared to just about all European cities. Go Adelaide!!

There was quite a few flat bed semis this morning going up Flinders street carrying components for a crane.
They just pull one down or they setting one up?

Adelaide Uni building will be next followed by central adelaide and then 115 KWS.

After that who knows, not much is happening at the Palladium on light site, but then
according to their website construction has started :)

At the Adelaide Uni medical centre site the crane base is at the south western corner of the site so maybe there could be 2 cranes? On a visit to Sydney earlier this month I lost count of the number of tower cranes .There was at least 70 not just in the city but spread out through out all the suburbs mostly on apartment projects. There were 10 cranes on the Barangaroo project.
