Poor decision. Just because something is native to Australia doesn't make it better. The city's most picturesque streets and spaces all use non-native trees (e.g. Frome road next to the uni, parkland between the city and North Adelaide etc).

These types of trees have been here as long as European settlement. It's as ridiculous as saying that non-indegenous Australians should be banned from going to Victoria Square in deference to the Kaurna people.

mattblack do you know why the event lawn will now accommodate 5000 people instead of 7000 to 9000?

In its current configuration the event space will only be able to hold 5,000 and does not take into account the space that will be made available with the refurbishment of the central roadway which has now been pushed forward. Once the road realignmrnt has taken place with the arbours put in and the inclusion of the central roadway space (when it is closed off for larger events) it is anticipated the more like the 7,000 figure will be able to be accomodated.

Strongly agree :applause: Nice to see there is some sense here. Native trees are generally foul.

Thanks for that! Didn't realize the road would be closed during events, adding more space!

Wow, you really had to jump at that bait Omada. Nosnah is just expressing his/her opinion (which is incidentally shared by a few people) albeit somewhat simplistically expressed. That's what this forum is for - no need to tell anybody to leave the country if they don't conform to your ideology. At least I won't tell you to go live in the bush and hug gum trees. What would be more interesting would be to discuss if all native vegetation should be sacrosanct, what the situation is in other places in the world etc. OK, that's just my opinion - now where should I be deported if I'm not interested in country England?

You have a good point there Reb-L, I think I shouldn't post so early in the morning next time :)

I was just trying to emphasise that, living in Australia, we should not be afraid of appreciating our local environment. In small things like using native trees on streetscaping (where possible) is a good way of enlightening us about our wonderful flora and fauna. (ok maybe a bit p.c but better)

Just received this... thrilled to finally see action!

NOTIFICATION OF CONSTRUCTION WORKS: Tuesday 16 April 2013

STAGE 1 OF THE VICTORIA SQUARE / TARNTANYANGGA UPGRADE

Please be informed that Fulton Hogan has been chosen by Adelaide City Council as the preferred contractor to undertake the construction works for Stage 1 of the upgrade to Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga. Fulton Hogan will begin preparing their construction site from today and will take approximately two weeks to transform the whole Square in to a busy construction site.

The whole of Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga will be affected as the works progress towards a December 2013 completion. The initial works will involve implementing suitable traffic and pedestrian management arrangements prior to removal of key elements such as the Queen Victoria Statue and the Three Rivers Fountain for restoration and reinstatement later in the Stage 1 upgrade.

To facilitate construction works in the northern and central sections of the Square, the southern part will be used to accommodate the construction site offices for Fulton Hogan. The construction site office will be fenced to minimise impact on the Park Lands in the southern part of the Square and makeshift road-ways and pedestrian paths will be constructed as a priority. Dedicated areas for trucks to enter and exit the site will be established in the both halves of the Square in order to minimise disruption around the whole Square.

Further details regarding the project are contained in a set of Frequently Asked Questions and these are available on Adelaide City Council’s website: www.victoriasquareadelaide.com.au.

Traffic management plans are also available on this website and further information about alternative options for commuters and pedestrians are available here: www.smartmoveadelaide.com.au.

As with any activity of this type, there will be some construction noise, dust and disruption to normal activities in the area. Steps will be taken to keep disruptions to a minimum, including regular reviews of traffic, pedestrian, noise and dust management with particular attention to dry and windy days and scheduling noisy works to maintain the ambience of the area surrounding the Square in peak times.

To provide a regular point of contact for business operators around Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga, the lead contractor on the project, Fulton Hogan, has engaged a Stakeholder Relations Manager, Carole Littlefair. If you should have any construction-related questions, Carole is your first point of contact and she is available on 0429 006 490 or email: [email protected].

Adelaide City Council is looking forward to seeing the benefits of this exciting project coming to fruition in the coming months. Your patience and understanding is valued and you will be pleased to see the Square become a more attractive and lively space for South Australians and visitors.

If you would like further information about Adelaide City Council’s Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga upgrade, please phone Customer Centre on 8203 7203 or email: [email protected].

I don't think that's a new tree. If you look closely at the photos from March 22, it is there.
