Built have been awarded the early works/ECI package for this project.
True that! As seen from their linkedin page: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/built-pt ... 69824-BlON

Anyway, given the status of the project, I assume this already has full development approval (planning + building). Can anyone confirm?

... wouldn’t be awarding building contracts without DA

...Well the package is ECI, most likely the builder is involved in the early stages.

This is a bit of a shame. Would have been good to integrate it, like how QT Sydney use the old theatre.
Art deco in Adelaide needs more protection says mayor over move to raze building for 25-storey QT hotel

The Avant-Garde building in the heart of Adelaide is set to be demolished for the new-age QT Hotel development — as there are calls for more protections for our historical buildings.

September 21, 2019 1:00pm

More of South Australia’s modernist-era architecture must be protected says a mayor and art deco enthusiast lamenting the imminent demolition of a 1930s city building for a $180 million hotel.

Prospect Council mayor David O’Loughlin has urged developers to rethink razing the 1937 former Avant-Garde furnishing building at 62 Currie Street saying it would be an “unnecessary loss” for the city.

But developers of a planned 25-storey QT Hotel said keeping the building was not viable.

The art deco property, on the northern side of Currie Street, was built in 1937 by the Waymouth Motor Company as a used car showroom.

Mr O’Loughlin, who is convener of the SA chapter of the Art Deco and Modernism Society, said the building, although not heritage-listed, had “incredible street presence”.

He said if the building was restored it could bring beauty and historical value to the hotel and the city.

“We were hopeful that you could use the land behind for the hotel but keep the front as a restaurant or the reception area and have an integrated solution … ideally that would be fabulous,” he said.

“It is a saddening fact that history lessons barely touch the value of art deco and modernism era architecture and officials also turn a blind eye on their value when making development decisions.”

The building was designed by Adelaide architects EH McMichael & Harris, who also designed the state heritage-listed former Savings Bank of SA building, now Bank SA, in King William St.

Mr O’Loughlin said that there was more to Adelaide than bluestone buildings and that “nowhere near enough” modern buildings had been heritage-listed.

“Unless we appreciate every part of our history it will be eroded and we are at risk of losing those buildings important parts of our cultural development as well as our architectural style,” he said.

But Mr O’Loughlin said he would not be making lodging a bid to heritage list the building.

The 200-room QT Hotel is a joint venture between ASX-listed developer Axiom Properties and the site’s owner Auspac Networks.

Axiom’s general manager Paul Rouvray said the companies had considered incorporating the building but it wasn’t viable for a “whole range of reasons”, including trying to meet certification for the hotel.

“The upside was we are working in with all the current laneway precincts to create another two laneways and couldn’t achieve what we needed to with that building,” he said.

He said demolition is expected to start early next year.

I really don't know how I feel about this. It's not pretty based off of the images. I can't imagine it looking any better in person. It looks dated as most of the other cement blocks in the city built through the 70's.

Yes I have to agree and said so earlier in the thread that I didn't really rate it on looks. Others will disagree, as they are entitled to.

Agreed, but at the same time the developers comments suggest they wouldn't have given a shit either way. Remember that previous proposals for this site have incorporated it, so I highly doubt it wouldn't have been possible to incorporate it.

Probably not on hold, per se, I'd say they're using the space for the Fringe next year.

When we get a decent rendering of at least the eastern facade I'll add it, but it will block out Sofitel :(

20-22 Currie (including 22-28 Peel Street and 27-37 Gilbert Street) has just been sold,

It'll take some time but expect to see something substantial go up here also - the previous developments submitted (and approved) for the site were quite impressive so I'm hoping the new one when it comes will be as impressive.

20-22 was sold when these previous proposals were put forth? Has mths site been re-sold? Thanks for that update. If all of these go ahead, Currie st will be truly transformed.
