Premier Jay Weatherill today launched plans to rejuvenate Hindley Street West in a $4 million upgrade of the University of South Australia’s precinct.

It is the first of a series of measures across the city which will see more than $12 million invested by the State and Federal Governments, Adelaide City Council and the private sector to regenerate the city’s public spaces.


Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood welcomed the continued rejuvenation of the city’s west end.

Tower cranes are always erected by a mobile crane (or another tower crane) first. Then as the building grows, the cranes are raised and this can be done by themselves by jacking up the head and inserting tower sections below. A mobile crane can erect a fairly high tower crane, depending on the size of the mobile crane - Maximum inital tower crane heights (freestanding) are 50-60m as any higher and they'll need a building to brace to.

Once the tower is high enough, the head and jib sections are lifted into position.

The tower crane is fully up as of tonight.

It is a hammerhead of a similar if not same nature as those on the SAHMRI project.

It has illuminated Hindmarsh and UniSA logos, making it look quite nice at night. Great view from the King William Street bridge over the Torrens, with 5 tower cranes behind the Convention Centre.

HINDLEY St West will be rejuvenated in a $4 million upgrade of the University of SA's precinct - the latest move aimed at revitalising the city.

A series of measures across the city involving more than $12 million invested by the SA and federal governments, Adelaide City Council and the private sector are aimed at regenerating the city's public spaces.

The rejuvenation projects will be announced over the coming months and will be aimed at delivering the best in design, open streetscapes and millions in investment.

Premier Jay Weatherill said the rejuvenation would make it a very attractive place for students and the public.

"With the new hospital precinct and expanded convention centre taking shape nearby, this project will be even more important," he said yesterday.

"Taken together, these projects will transform the northwest of Adelaide's CBD into a vibrant, buzzing place filled with people."

Adelaide City Council and The University of South Australia have also each pledged $1 million to the project.

UniSA is now able to finalise the designs to transform its Hindley St facade into an attractive, people-friendly place by the end of 2013.

Federal Employment Participation Minister Kate Ellis, who is also the local Member, said the Commonwealth's $1 million contribution from the Liveable Cities program was focused on priority projects to make Adelaide more productive and sustainable.

"It is crucial that we continue to rejuvenate the CBD to encourage more people to move into what is the undoubtedly the best city in the world," Ms Ellis said.

"However to do this we must make the city a more vibrant place and to make it easier for city residents to move around."

Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood welcomed the continued rejuvenation of the city's west end.

"Partnerships are vital for the transformation of Adelaide and I welcome the state and federal

governments' contribution to our city streets and commend UniSA on its bold vision to make Hindley Street people-friendly," he said.

NEW LOOK: An artist's impression of the proposed UniSA building on Hindley St.

WIDER footpaths, more trees and a reduced speed limit will help turn a section of Hindley St into a pedestrian friendly area.

The State and Federal governments, City Council and UniSA last week announced they would each pitch in $1 million to help make the street safer for students.

The $4 million project will include more street furniture and trees, widening the footpaths, re-paving a section of the road and reducing the speed limit - likely to be cut from 50km/h to 40km/h.

Work is expected to start in coming months and finish at the end of next year.

The City Messenger last month reported UniSA had approached the council about making Hindley St safer for students moving between its City West campus on North Tce and its new $85 million learning centre being built on Hindley St.

Outgoing UniSA vice chancellor Professor Peter Hoj said the work would make the area safer for students and the public.

“When we have 15,000 students coming here, those 15,000 students will not have to fear for a single car coming down the street,” Prof Hoj said.

“International students will think this will be really exciting too so there will be even more foreign cuisine, more people in the restaurants and everyone will benefit.”

Premier Jay Weatherill said the upgrade would complement the expanded Adelaide Convention Centre and new RAH.
