I don't think this has been posted yet...

interesting. i'm certain most would agree with you.
however if i were to level similar claims of perversion of facts against the Advertiser for other stories relating to bigger issues i'd expect to be called all kinds of names by most too. :)

From the Advertiser:
Oval vote boosts stocks for Labor and footy

Daniel Wills From: The Advertiser May 03, 2011 12:00AM

PREMIER Mike Rann's stocks have received an immeasurable boost from SACA members' endorsement of football in the city as beneficial for every South Australian.

Many said it could not be done. The 75 per cent majority seemed an impossible target yesterday amid reports early votes had fallen well short.

A majority as large as that delivered last night is rarely seen in the democratic world and there could be no stronger mandate for progress. There is also a remarkable coalition of sporting executives and fans, as well as political leaders on both sides of the divide, who want AFL at Adelaide Oval.

While many will claim the result as a win for the state, there will be few people as pleased as Mr Rann.

His pleasure won't be derived from the imminent chance to eat a meat pie at a city Showdown, but the giant political dividend delivered by last night's vote.

Support for his leadership and the Labor party has slumped to record lows and the Government is pinning hopes of revival on the success of its building agenda.

Mr Rann went to the election claiming credit for rescuing SA from "rust-bucket" status and has billions of dollars of infrastructure projects in the pipeline.

Roads are being built in the city's north and south and the desalination plant, while troubled, will open later this year.

However, the two projects which resonate most in voters' minds are the Adelaide Oval redevelopment and Royal Adelaide Hospital build.

Failure on either would decimate confidence in the Government's ability to deliver on rhetoric.

Despite Labor's post-election attempts to crab-walk away from the Adelaide Oval plan and put the burden of success or failure on the sporting codes, voters see it as a government project.

No level of protest could erase the fact Mr Rann's personal fortunes were tied to the outcome.

Failure would have made voters think twice about the real benefits of the mining exploration boom, likelihood of blow-outs in the hospital budget and Mr Rann's personal judgment.

But this success allows him to point to bricks-and-mortar results while painting the Opposition as wreckers who failed to advocate progress.

He now faces the test of finding the finance to begin construction.

The ultimate price tag for the full-costed city stadium will almost certainly be larger than the Government's pledged $535 million.

The shortfall will have to come from a combination of private investment, the AFL, Stadium Management Authority borrowings and the Federal Government.

There is also a slim chance that Adelaide City Council could throw a spanner in the works.

However, the heaviest lifting has been done and Mr Rann wakes today a larger man and a more imposing and secure leader.

Absolutely ecstatic! :D

Hopefully this is a sign that attitudes are changing in this sleepy city.

Still the hard work begins now to bring it to life ...

But I'm quietly confident that the Oval and the Torrens riverfront redevelopment will be the "game-changer" that can seriously revitalise the city, much in the same way that Docklands stadium and Crown Casino/Southbank did to Melbourne a decade ago.

Bring it on!

Wow! I went to sleep last night thinking this was a lost cause. Wake up this morning and SACA members have done Adelaide and SA proud.

This is huge. Do people really understand what is going on in this state at the moment? There are that many projects occurring, we are finally transforming this city and bringing it into the 21st century.

This project will have huge flow on effects for the CBD. I suspect recent proposals such as the hotel tower on Currie Street were proposed in response to an expectation this project would go ahead. If it failed I wonder about the viability of such projects. I'm sure there are other projects in the planning stages too apart from the obvious riverbank developments. Finally the riverbank will actually become a destination in Adelaide. While not on the scale of Melbourne I believe we are now heading in the right direction.

The best thing for Adelaide in a very, very long time.

Once again, it just goes to show the vocal minority do make a lot of noise but aren't at all reflective of the wider community. We'd be wise to remember that next time a few hundred people have a whinge.

Hopsital, desal plant, trams, city stadium development. Rann won't win the next election but his legacy will be strong. He gets things done, which in this city is a major achievement. I'll be forever greatful. Thanks Ranny.

I look forward to seeing how the Government and SMA encourage the use of PT to the footy.

by then we will have electric trains etc so now to get people to use them.

I'm just hoping that some of our members can continue to live their lives notwithstanding the endorsement of this "tragic fiasco".
