G'day guys, true to my user name (for those Boston Legal fans) we are still undefeated! This project has been a work in progress for over 3 years, but as they say, good things come to those who wait! Hopefully this decision by the adelaide City Council not only opens up the opportunity to a fantastic addition to the skyline, but also addresses the long overdue issue of the Urban Planning of that entire block bound by North Terrace, Rundle, Frome and Pulteney Streets.

Also, and as far as I am concerned, more importantly, it has set a precedent for the future of Heritage in terms of looking past the built form and giving important regard to the past, current and future use of the site. The report from State Heritage is excellent and well worth a read - it is available from the Council website. Look foward to keeping everyone updated on this project as tine goes on.

I don't mind the building, but I wish they'd change the colour!

personally i like the colour. It has a certain "je ne sais quoi"
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Did any one see the article in the advertiser today? It was typical adelaide media crap. It said the grand hall will make way for a new 17 level block. It showed a picture of the freemason lodgewith the pillars on north terrace, indicating that was being demolished  . It talked down the new development and talked about the past history of the hall at the back. The article didin't even mention that the freenason lodge would get a 'facelift'. I think the media is purposely trying to get the public angry.

Anger sells newspapers. I haven't seen the article, but I can imagine it's the usual rubbish we've come to expect from News Ltd. Thankfully this has already been approved so it makes no difference anyway.

I must admit Frank, when I saw the article I was thinking the same thing. The media is interesting - they have a huge impact on the thoughts of many peoples lives, almost constant ear bashing from TV, newspapers, internet, radio, that influence how we live - yet the media can virtually make up, or misinterpret anything they like. I dont think they should be allowed to. I think all newspapers should be forced to carry warning messages on every page down the bottom, that say :

"In order to maximise profit for this newspaper, some parts and the makeup of these stories can be influenecd/sensationalised by the thoughts expressed by the journalist or editor, not actual fact from the source."

I think this scripting should be law, just like cigarette companies have to display warnings on their packaging.

The article mentioned was in the 'Heritage matters' column section so it really is only the opinion of one jounalist.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that the existing Freemason's building is ugly? I think it's a shame that it has been heritage listed, and the conspiracy theorist in me suspects that Freemasonry connections among the 'powers that be' have managed to save it long past its use-by date.

While I'm totally supportive of the retention and restoration of historically important and architecturally significant buildings, I just can't see this one among them. I would love to see this new development extend all the way to North Terrace and replace the horrible Freemasonry castle.

A man can dream...

Freemasons is nice. Even if it wasn't heritage listed, there are many, many, many other buildings that are far more worthy of demolition, such as the Adelaide Uni buildings and the red-brick car park next door.

In case there's any remaining doubt, I heard from Nick Tridente, the architect, that it will in fact be corten steel. Should be quite iconic, especially given that there are very few buildings like this in Australia, or anywhere else!

No info at their website unfortunately...
