Do you have some crystal ball device that can predict trends in building aesthetics?
Round ones would be so 1920's (art deco). But who knows what will look dated in the future. So far the only design movement to have passed the test of time is Bauhaus. Which still looks contemporary to most people.

Is it just me or does the front of the building appear to invert into its centre?

It certainly does appear to 'concave'...

This one is recommended for approval at Monday night's ACC DAP meeting. Whether the Council DAP approves it or not is anyone's guess.

Probably has a chance if the independent panel members decide to roll up to the meeting this time.

I just pray most of these resi projects don't go down the gurgler with the current credit situation.

I think the resi bldgs have a fair chance due to the numbers of overseas students coming to Adelaide.

I am looking forward to this project giving access from North Tce though to Rundle Street via Synagogue lane. This lane is overdue for an upgrade.

There's a little article in the paper today that the council assessment experts have recommended planning approval for this building at tomorrow night's DAP meeting.

Approved! From the ACC website:
Historic lodge restored in City tower development

04 Aug 2008

The Adelaide City Council’s Development Assessment Panel has approved a new $60 million apartment tower on North Terrace – which will also see important conservation work go ahead at the historic Masonic Lodge.

The proposal involves demolishing the hall at the rear of the Lodge and constructing an 18-level apartment and office building, as well as three levels of car parking and a ground-level public plaza creating a new pedestrian link between Synagogue Place and North Terrace.

The proposed tower incorporates a number of energy efficient and sustainability elements including rainwater reticulation and re-use, balcony overhangs, and a solar hot water system.

Lord Mayor Michael Harbison said importantly, the historic Masonic Lodge will also undergo significant restoration and conservation work.

“The Masonic Lodge on North Terrace has been home to South Australia’s Freemasons since 1927, so it’s very important the Lodge continues to be used and remains part of the social fabric of the City,” he said.

“The proposed 18-level tower will include more than 130 residential apartments, providing more options for individuals and families considering living in the City – as well as more than 160 bicycle parking spaces.”

Also tonight, the Development Assessment Panel has agreed to a compromise proposal for the City Central Tower 8 development.

The Lord Mayor says the result is a better building for the City.

“The compromise proposal addresses many of the concerns expressed by Panel members when the original proposal was refused last month, including an increased set-back to Bentham Street and a better relationship between the proposed tower and the historic Darling Building,” he said.

“It also includes an improved environment for pedestrians in Bentham Street.”

“The compromise proposal and the Panel’s agreement is a win for the CBD, as it will deliver a better building more in keeping with the unique heritage and character of our City.”

This will be a great addition to the eastern end of North Tce and the link to synagogue place and Rundle Street will add extra life to the east end.

Would I be too fussy to say on a technicality (rounding off) this is actually 61m?
