EVERYTHING on the northern side of North Terrace is in the Park Lands. I have a copy of Light's original plan and back then he didn't factor in the Railways, Museum, Library, University, Art Gallery etc. He drew a spot for Government House, a hospital in the east park lands, army barracks, storage facility and not much else.
The fact that Colonel Light himself factored in Government House and a hospital implies that he had no qualms about placing buildings and structures in the parklands. Thus, it shows the argument frequently used by the APPA that placing buildings in the parklands is offensive to Light’s vision to be utter nonsense. All it highlights is how fanatical and deluded members of the APPA are.
Quite right. I have searched high and low to find some sort of transcript of his intentions for the immense park lands, however yet to find anything. The other thing to note is there was nothing beyond the town of Adelaide, so, no bordering roads like Greeenhill, Fullarton/Dequetteville to define the size of the park area. So were they really a designed and framed park lands? No.

Clearly it all has to go then. Bulldoze the new convention centre buildings, health precinct, rip up the railways and move the station west. Once parkland, always parkland. Amen.

The APPA's intent to protect and maintain the parklands is good, but they see everything in black and white. If their lord and saviour William Light drunkenly decided a patch of mud was Holy Parkland, then for the rest of eternity it shall be as such, even if having a public building there is better.

I'm happy for Government to have buildings on the park lands.

But not private enterprise plenty of land for them to do that

Exactly, it completely undermines any time they have a good complaint. I roll my eyes every time they publish an item from their "land stolen from the parklands list" and it's a maintenance shed... for council workers looking after the parklands.

That looks reasonably attractive to me, albeit a little sterile. They'd do a lot better with before/now/after pictures of the Festival Centre from a viewpoint near the top bus stop on the other side of King William Road. A bin, a drinking fountain and a bike rack would improve the vista in that photo, too.

I’m so bored of this lot screeching “...but LIGHT’S VISION!” every time anything north of North Terrace is proposed as if he was Jesus walking and every stroke of his 1836 quill is sacrosanct.

Fellas have some sympathy with these people. Wait til you are seventy years old. You might see the world from a different perspective. So why don't we soften their hearts? Let's add a few trees (not gumtrees), flower beds and perhaps a fountain too. Shade, greenery and water always helps to calm things down.

Cheers

When I took my mrs to Adelaide for a visit I took her to Light's Vision. Apparently in the time I have been away, Light's Vision became Light's Vision of Adelaide Oval

The city just needs taller buildings then ;)

You guys should read the real history of Adelaide - Light's vision was actually Kingston's vision, which Light got all the credit for. Didn't design it, didn't visit the spot Kingston chose before approving it, didn't modify the plans to fit the location chosen.

No, but he might have had qualms about the PUBLIC parklands being leased off to private investors... Note: government house, a hospital, a police barracks - all publicly owned buildings. A hotel, a casino, an office tower - all privately owned facilities. The APPA are morons but most of the comments on this thread suggest that whilst they may very much lean to one side of the argument, a lot of you here appear to lean very much in the on the other side of the argument with zero understanding or consideration for why one might not support elements of this development.

As much as they are unique asset, the parklands have been a hindrance to Adelaide's growth. Especially when it comes to this mob.
That's a bullshit excuse... There are plenty of places that could be developed in the CBD and inner city suburbs. That's like saying heritage is a hindrance on Adelaide's growth when as it has been mentioned on other threads, there are plenty of dilapidated and disused sites in the CBD that could be used for development. Based on your comment, you would have Adelaide become sterile by removing its most prized asset that sets it apart from everywhere else in the world.

This development, and that of the Adelaide Oval Hotel are not increasing the existing developed footprint. IF either of them carved into more greenspace, then surely that would be the time to have a justifiable whinge.
