Have waited a long time to see the finishes on this one before I commented, in case I was wrong. But WOW!! This below average building dominates pretty much my every view when I walk and drive around my corner of the city, and have to say i'm disappointed with the outcome. No architectural merit at all in its design, the colour scheme is bland, blank walls on the podium and its sheer bulk stands out like a sore thumb. No doubt it will be a financial success due to the large number of apartments crammed into this eyesore. 152 Grote Street puts this one to shame in terms of design and finish.
It's yet to be seen if it'll have the balcony gardens as seen in the promotional renders

Also of course it's going to stick out because it's built in a flat area. For Adelaide to build up the first lot of buildings are going to stick out.

An update as at 20 Sep 17. The shade cloth on the western side is gradually coming down starting at the top on the western side. Pictures show details of top floors.

There was a puff piece in the 'tiser the other day talking about the plants that will be installed on this building.
Green living reaches for the sky

EVERYONE loves gardens - they’re colourful, contribute to a healthy lifestyle, and they’re good for the environment.

But they can be hard to find in the concrete jungles of our nation’s cities.

Well, here’s one you won’t be able to miss.

Today, the first plant was installed at Adelaide’s largest vertical garden, or green wall at the $110 million, 22-floor apartment complex Bohem at the corner of Wright and Morphett St.

The ‘green wall’ on the 234-apartment complex will feature more than 2000 plants, all supplied by fifth-generation SA business Heyne’s Wholesale Nursery.

The first tree installed was a crepe myrtle biloxi, and was hoisted up to level six this morning - the last task the site’s crane will perform before being dismantled.

The tree is one of more than 35 different plant species to be installed at the site and will be located on the complex’s entertainment deck overlooking the pool.

Heyne’s Wholesale Nursery’s Carl Heyne, who is overseeing the green wall, said to see it come to fruition after a long period of planning was awesome.

“This project was particularly exciting and fulfilling for me, especially knowing it will go on to be the emerald in the crown of Adelaide’s urban jungle,” Mr Heyne said.

“There’s no doubt at all that greening our cities makes people healthier.

“I think there’s a worldwide discussion around the importance of greening our cities.

“There’s a lot of talk about making the city of Adelaide carbon neutral and obviously green life is an integral part of that.”

Mr Heyne said green walls were more important than ever.

“With today’s smaller block sizes and larger living areas, one of the challengers that garden designers are now facing is how to ‘invade vertical space’,” Mr Heyne said.

“Green walls and vertical gardens are a great way of doing this.

“Not only do they serve an ornamental purpose; often softening formal hardscaping or giving background to the outlook from living areas but they can also serve very important functional purposes.”

Bohem is just one of many other green wall projects across the city, and the Adelaide City Council is all for them.

In fact, earlier this year they ran a Green City Grant Program offering residences and businesses grants towards creating pockets of greenery and adding to the street appeal.

The program, which ran between February 20 and April 18, started at $500 for residents and $1000 for business and building owners, up to a maximum grant of $10,000 in matched funding.

An Adelaide City Council spokesman said 26 projects were approved, and another 10 proposals are in the scoping stage.

“More than $75,000 in grants has now been allocated to the 26 greening projects, valued at approximately $150,000,” the spokesman said.

Despite the program having closed, the spokesman said it continued to strike a chord with city residents and business owners.

“The grant program is continuing to attract interest, with city residents and businesses registering to be notified of future funding rounds,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman said vertical gardens were important in built-up environments.

“Green walls reduce urban heat and build resilience to climate change as well as making Adelaide a more liveable city,” the spokesman said.

“The project is also helping to improve the health and sustainability of the city’s tree population and other greening.

“The City of Adelaide Strategic Plan also seeks that we work with stakeholders to increase public and private greening through green walls and roofs, and the green wall demonstrates our commitment to this goal.”

Glad to hear they're sticking with the greenery. I feared a little it was only an advertising feature and they wouldn't bother with it in real life.

As at Sunday 15 Oct 17 the west and south sides are almost free of shade cloth but the east side is still mostly covered up.

As Ben has mentioned in the crane thread, the crane removal here is in full swing.
