I wonder why the glass cladding from Eastern side couldn’t have been copied to the western wall? It would have been a good design otherwise.
One wonders why developers go for such a cheap alternative with our buildings?

It's as if every person who comments on the western wall thinks they're the first person ever to do so.

Like, you've got me. It's concrete. How about that.

They're putting up a building on eastern end of Collins Street here in Melbourne and the core is on the western side but they've clad it with fake windows etc, looks quite good!

Regarding blank concrete walls, which are usually the consequence of a building abutting a property boundary, this isn’t the developers fault; but a failure of the Council’s own development plan which permits blank concrete walls.

If the development plan was amended so it prohibits blank concrete walls, and that alternative design solutions must be put in place (i.e. murals, fake windows, alternative cladding materials, etc.) then developers would have to abide by these regulations in order for their building to be approved.

Most of us on here hate them, and there’s too many examples around Adelaide to count, so we really should be petitioning the Adelaide City Council to amend its development plan so that we don’t see this happening any more. Anyone up for collaborating and writing another submission?

I'll take a blank wall over fake windows. That should never be a thing.

Yes, buildings should be required to be designed 'in the round'.

Happy to help with the submission.

We would also need to target the State Government as most of these large projects end up being taken out of ACC's hands when being assessed.

Yes most projects are assessed by the State Government, but they are still assessed against the Adelaide City Council Development Plan. Here is the link below.

(Note to moderators: I'm happy for you to move this part of the discussion to a new thread).

https://www.dpti.sa.gov.au/__data/asset ... t_Plan.pdf

A quick search does pull up this interesting tidbit in regards to Principles of Development Control for the Adelaide (City) Policy Area, on page 192.

(b) providing a high degree of visual interest though articulation, avoiding any large blank facades, and incorporating design features within blank walls on side boundaries which have the potential to be built out;

It's in there, but it is clearly not being adhered to.

It should be a clearer, singular clause.

What constitutes a blank wall? What constitutes a facade? Let's tighten these definitions; they're open to being stretched - and do get stretched, believe it or not.

I noticed that the west wall of the new GPO building is not bare concrete but has some form of cladding, hard to get a good picture.

I think I posted a photo in that thread a few weeks ago.

I couldn't get a photo, but at night Kodo is just as prominent as Westpac when flying into Adelaide.

Lucky enough to have a tour with Flagship group the other day of the sub penthouse, 2 bedroom and 1 bedroom layouts. Despite what some think of the external appearance, the internal finishing is probably the best I’ve seen for appartments in Adelaide.
