And don't forget the average looking apartment complex next to the other vacant corner. Hopefully the corner will be enticed by this project.

As for the petrol station, I don't know of any other city in Australia that has not just one, but TWO unnecessarily large petrol stations within its CBD.
From memory I believe the open car park will become a 7 or 8 level car park.
Guys, Calvary will build the 7-8 story car park on the open air car park directly behind the OTR (to the west on angas st). They have nothing to do with the open air car park on the south-east corner of the Pultney/angas st intersection.

Having said that, I have heard a rumour that whoever owns that land is potentially planning retirement apartments on that site (which would make sense given the hospital on the opposite corner)

Just look at those multi-storey car parks in Wakefield street to see how much "life" they have brought into the area...
The new hospital will be close to public transport/walking distance to Victoria Square so transport is really not an issue.
2 new 20 storey apartment blocks on the petrol station corners.......now that really would activate this part of the city.
I realise that car-parks are taboo on this forum, but hospitals need carparks.

Most patients are sick, debilitated and elderly. Such people often find it hard to walk several hundred metres to catch public transport.

Furthermore, hospitals operate on a 24 hour basis. Our public transport is not 24 hours. Not to mention the potential impact on patient safety if on-call doctors do not have somewhere to park in the case of an emergency.

I don't think that carpark is for the exclusive use of the hospital.

I wonder if others on this forum realise how huge this building will be? It has a frontage to Angas St of approx 85m. That's about the same length as the Myer Centre has on Rundle Mall. Yet this building will be substantially taller.

Patients arrive at hospitals by ambulance, taxi or relatives drive them there. Sick people do not drive themselves to hospital wanting to park the car.....you could be there for days and so could your car, incurring a huge cost.

Yes and no....nurses shifts ( and I presume doctors as well) start at 7-30am, 2pm and 10/11pm.
Doctors work set hours..its up to them to arrive for work on time.
These new car parks will be used by non-sick people (probably better paid health professionals and visitors) They are not intrinsic to the operation of the hospital.

I actually work in a hospital, so I feel I have a grasp of how things work in one.

Yes, critically ill patients arrive by ambulance. However, you have failed to consider all the people who come for outpatient clinics or day cases.

With the exception of junior doctors and ED doctors, most senior doctors do not work set hours. Private hospitals are run mainly by private specialists, whom come in at sporadic hours based upon the needs of their patients. Furthermore, you have failed to explain the implications of on-call doctors having to waste time parking several blocks away, or God-forbid having to catch a bus when called in for an emergency.

Also, consider the nurses doing the overnight shift. Many nurses at the WCH do not feel safe walking alone at 11PM to work. Angas Street is pretty dead and lonely at night. I can foresee the same problems happening here.

Whilst I get your argument of trying to reduce car-dependency in Adelaide, one must also be pragmatic enough to put aside ideology and realise there are certain cases where carparking is warranted. A hospital is one such case.

Looks to be about 55-60m tall to me. I base that on the belief that the next door Police HQ looks to be about 2/3 as tall as this one, and if I remember correctly, the police HQ is about 40m tall.

I've added it to my Google Earth and I think I made it 57m tall on Sketchup as an estimate.

walked st the car park diagonally across from this site, completely full - so clearly enough demand for a carpark, only question will be if there is some ground floor retail/office facing Pulteney.

Will be great for the area as i have said before, updated plans go to show how huge the building is and the impact it will have down that side of town, and a nice little density filler too regarding the carpark.

Calvary Hospital’s plans to merge three facilities into CBD location given green light

October 23, 2015 2:09pm

ANTHONY TEMPLETONCITY EDITOR The City

CALVARY Hospital’s $250 million city expansion plans have been approved.

The new hospital will consolidate three facilities into the largest private health provider in the CBD.

The Development Assessment Commission – the state’s independent planning body – announced it had approved the hospital’s plans on Friday.

The project includes a 13-storey hospital built on the corner of Angus and Pulteney St, and a separate eight-storey car park with office and retail space.

The new hospital would have room for 397 beds, including 48 day beds.

There would also be an emergency department with four ambulance bays.
