Plans have been lodged with the ACC to begin internal demolition, in order to convert this former office building into short term apartment accomodation. The internal demolition phase of the building is expected to cost $400 000.

The latest edition of Building News suggests this development, (the conversion of the former Westpac building on the corner of King William Street and North Terrace to a hotel) will commence construction in September at a cost of $20 million. It was definatly this building listed and not the hotel conversion at 41-55 King William Street.

Hopefully they do start then. This one has sat vacant for a while, it is starting to look a bit rundown and together with the boarding up at 41-55 King William Street, this creates a bad impression along one of our most important city streets.

The quicker the better. I'm often walking past this, and it has started to appear quite dingy; in fact, the cantilever* over the KWS footpath is waterlogged and sagging.

(*EDIT: changed from balcony)

Just to be clear, this is Westpac on the corner of North Terrace. It didn't have balconies or awnings last I looked, although I may be confused.

Can the thread title please be changed to something less ambiguous. Thanks.

Unless I am confused, there is an awning* or cantilever protruding from the building over the KWS footpath.

Agree with suggestion to changed thread title.

I dont ever remember awning/cantilever cover at the normal level with this building - like all banks of earlier times, no cover was provided - like unspoken lore in bank building. A loss as IMO. (Last seen by me in Jan.2008).

#U/R: Westpac Bank > Four Seasons of Adelaide - Hotel Renovation

Hows that for a thread title?

Unfortunately this hotel will be known as just 'Seasons of Adelaide' which will be managed by a very small company which also manages a hotel in Perth called, you guessed it, Seasons of Perth, as opposed to the international hotel chain Four Seasons Hotels. If this was going to be a Four Seasons Hotel I would be screaming with happiness as they would have to be THE BEST hotel chain in the world!

...so I think another change of the thread title should be made to avoid confusion. When I read it I was like O...M...G! Four Seasons in Adelaide!!???

This is going to sound silly but does the four seasons hotel group have anything to do with another company that shares that name? (you know the one, which manufacturers contraceptive devices)

The Four Seasons name has been tainted! Haha there would be absolutely no relation between the two companies, but I'm sure they would be the brand of choice for use in their public restroom dispensers

I'm gunna be really nit-picky here considering I'm at fault for the title change, but the thread title already states the U/R (under renovation) and then the reno again.

It really should be #U/R: Westpac Bank > Seasons of Adelaide Hotel

A bit more history behind the building on the corner of Nth terrace and KWS. This building was designed by Claridge, Hassell & McConnell as a competition entry and was seen a landmark for its time. It also represented the first wave of modern influences in SA with its inter-war stripped classical style. Some photo links fyi-

Unfortunately this one looks like it's fallen victim to the credit downturn as the building is back on the market.
