[CAN] 100 Grote Street | 56m | 15lvls | Hotel

An application was put in to the city council today.

The development consisted of the redevelopment of the Grote st church and a 15 level hotel tower. The hotel will be a 200 room 5star hotel in prime location in the city with access to the bus station and across from the central markets and in walking distance of tram line. The hotel will possibly be a Sheraton.
Early renders were of a plane 12 level glass box tower. But since then has changed to a more attractive looking tower which creates the allusion to be three separate towers with the middle section the tallest.

I will post more information tomorrow along with renders. :)
It will make quite an impact on the skyline when viewed from the South.

Wow! Great find. This development should add nicely to the density of the precinct project. I was driving drown Grote street tonight and it looks like the upgrade of Grote street is well and truly underway. Can't wait until it's all done.

Will this be the first Sheraton in Adelaide?

Not the first time something similar to this has been attempted:
Image

They built four mega columns in the middle of each of the four sides of the Citigroup Center in New York to support the 60 or so floors above. This was to allow the building to sit above a church under one corner.

The construction of the building almost ended in disaster. Some of the joints along the diagonal bracing were too weak to deal with extreme forces such as the wind because they were bolted when they should have been welded.

Is the building going to sit entirely above the church, or just partially over it?

This is an interesting development.

However I find the site to be un-suitable for a 5-star hotel. People will not want to pay a lot of money to be accomodated next to a bus station. Furthermore that area of the city is filled with backpacker hostels which would provide a strange contrast.

Couldnt agree with you more Will. Its not an ideal location for a 5 star hotel is it. Furthermore, it is quite a distance away from the financial centre i.e.nortern half of kws. I still dont understand where its gonna go... I mean the church isnt gonna get demolished is it?

True guys, but on other hand it could be argued the Hilton is next to the markets, and the Hyatt next to the train station.

I don't think the location is too bad, its still in the NW quadrant of the city where a lot of new construction is going on.

Besides, a quick walk to Vic Square and the tram will take you to N Tce!

You also have China town and the restaurant strip in Gouger Street, and commercial and law developments in Victoria Square and environs. A future tram loop extension down Grote Street, and you'll never know a link to the Airport.

Cheers

This is what they should have done with the North Terrace end of the REMM (Myer) development.
