This was also mentioned in today's Tiser. It's good to see the squares becoming the focal points they deserve to be.

Good news everyone!

So how come these ones got approved 1st up and Aurora on the diagonal opposite didn't? They're higher than that was, aren't they?

Haven't got the heights handy but I think these are just shorter than Aurora on Pirie. Also, I guess, being apartments the ACC are happier to see them go up. They want their population target.

You mean 'The Block'? Really that should have gone as well.

From the Messenger:
Academy site apartments

Aaron Coultate

04Sep07

MULTI-storey apartments and a hotel will replace the old Academy Cinemas, Hindmarsh Square, although one councillor believes it's ``over dominant''.

Adelaide Development Assessment Panel this week approved the $69.5 million development, which includes a 15-storey hotel and 14-storey residential block, parking and retail space. There will be nearly 400 rooms in all.

The hotel stands at 52m, 12m above the advisory height for that site in the city development plan, although right next door the advisory height is 53m. After the 5:2 panel vote on Monday night, Cr Judith Brine said ``I don't see the point of having an advisory height''. In contrast, Lord Mayor Michael Harbison insisted the height was appropriate.

Those renders make it look like it should be a old style hospital, not modern apartments.

I think they look very late 90ish, much like the North Terrace apartments adjacent the Morphett Street Bridge.

Yes and it's none other than Judith Brine the mental case behind the Victoria Park fiasco. Dangerous and saltry just as her name suggests. (Brine)
