What I can't understand is that you've got a tonne of empty office blocks along Greenhill and Fullarton Roads which could be converted into apartment living but instead they've gone for this option which is rubbish.
The government owns the Glenside site. They don't own the office blocks along Greenhill and Fullarton Roads. (All they can do is rezone them and lift height limits — which they've done/proposed).

Looking at the master plan, they doesn't seem to be any significantly less public space, and what's there will be of much better quality than what's there now. So what if an oval get's built on and the open space is located elsewhere? The site is adjacent the south east parklands, which let's face it, isn't hurting for sporting fields. (In fact, that's practically all that section of parklands is).

I think the issue is that the open space is literally a water retention basin, not true open space.

the East isn't blessed with huge open space (well outside the parklands 500 metres down the road  ) so preserving whats left isn't a big deal for me, not like you can go back and put it in.

I don't see why this school can't continue to use Flinders University or, perhaps develop/maintain an oval in an underutilized area of the park lands or share with another school.
Students, coaches, parents travel to school sports' matches, often on weekends, so a few kms either way isn't an issue.

Mercedes College pushing to keep oval earmarked for apartments under Glenside redevelopment
MERCEDES College is pushing for an oval at the former Glenside Hospital site — earmarked for eight-storey apartments — to be kept as open space.

Principal Peter Daw said the Springfield school was prepared to pay to maintain the oval for its football and cricket teams.
The school used the oval until 2010 ...

Mercedes’ own oval is not large enough for full-size Australian rules or cricket matches.
Since 2010, the school’s teams have been based at Flinders University but the Glenside site is closer.

Because Flinders is well out of the way.
