I hate to sound cynical, but this was originally proposed in January 2001, and STILL nothing has happened!

However, assuming one day they actually do it, the plans, whilst certainly not spectacular by any standards, would be enough to transform the current hellhole into a somewhat reasonably respectable shopping centre.

Specificaly I believe they include:
- Extended and refurbished Big W
- New Woolworths alongside and to the right of Big W
- Food court (at last) in the space now occupied by Woolworths
- New mall areas near new Woolworths and also near Coles (with improved entry to coles and new mall entrances)
- Depending on who you believe or which plans you look at, Harris Scarfe will either be cut down to about half the size and will still be a Harris Scarfe (with the remainder converted into a new mall), or else it will be converted into a Myer department store, or possibly a target discount store.
- The underground and rooftop carparks will also be extended a bit.

So not exactly brilliant, but still better than nothing and long, long, long overdue, so it will be interesting to see if it does happen!

Demolition started today on the old warehouse next to centro. Looks like it's happening. I took some pics i'll upload later.

According to Centros website it has been approved and work will be commencing "in the 2008 financial year" (which presumably means anytime between now and next June).

I am hoping realistically that work will actually start early in the new year (as I can't see them doing anything that would interfere with the Christmas trading period).

The old 2nd hand shop has pretty much completely gone, and is now just a pile of rubble. Several other buildings remain fenced off and presumably will be demolished in the next few days.

I'm just waiting now to hear that a group of local residents have just found out about the redevelopment and lodged an appeal against it, and requested that Centro Arndle be preserved in its current form and heritage listed!!!

Might sound silly but it's just about what nearly always happens whenever anyone wants to improve buildings in Adelaide, isn't it?

It was the first shopping cnetre in Adelaide, so one could argue it has 'heritage' value.

Does anyone know why this shopping centre was called Arndale? Where did they get that from?

It was named for the original developers. From memory, they were a UK company of Arnold & Chippendale, & combined the names. Marion was the second Arndale in SA, but dropped the Arndale identity, unlike the original. I lived in Third Avenue when the thing was proposed, & remember the land being cleared, & the original layout with John Martins dominating, but it has changed beyond recognition since then.

Very insightful! Thanks for that, I think the wikipedia article for centro arndale should change to reflect this.
