This was an article from the Advertiser (17th Sept 05) showing the proposed entertainment complex which is expected to replace the old Magic Mountain. Looks like the usual complaints from the council. From the drawing there's going to be a ferris wheel too. Hopefully, it'll come up sweet and I reckon it should add to the touristy things to do at Glenelg.

It'll certainly improve activity occurring in the area. At the moment, the apartments and retail section that made up stage 1 of the Holdfast Shores development and the Pier Hotel are basically isolated from the main shopping area at Jetty Road and Moseley Square, particularly since the "pile of dung" was demolished. There is going to be a new link directly from Moseley Square to this new complex with more retail if I remember correctly.

This is an excelelnt development for Glenelg which will obviously make it a premier tourist destination in Australia.

Despite the benefits that this development will create, local residents still inundate the local Messenger with complaints, claiming that this development is taking away more open space. (in reality this development will use less space than the old magic mountain)

You don't instigate change over night. You slowly chip away, piece by piece, so people never notice the transition.

Or you just wait the oldies out. Holdfast Bay has the highest median age in the metropolitan area

I really think Adelaides desperately needs a decent entertainment complex. The Adelaide Casino holds that claim but that's only if you're keen on gambling. I can only suggest that this is a good start and perhaps it can be built upon. It is really a bigger issue than just a place for Adelaide people to go, it's more about bringing life to a city which up until now has been a little quiet.

Good news gentlemen!

It appears the Holdfast Bay council will actually approve the 'London Eye' ferris wheel. After a community consultation, the overwhelming majority of people supported the proposal. In the local Messenger, it is reported that the majority of councillors also support the proposal.

Thank God! The councill is finally starting to show some sense! With the construction of this new amusement centre and the redevelopment of Moseley Square, Glenelg is looking very nice indeed.

Isn't the ferris wheel down at Semaphore the same one that used to be at Glenelg?

The old Glenelg courthouse is currently being demolished. I am sad that this elegant building is being destroyed, because the shopping arcade replacing it looks 'cheap'. It's a shame that the developers could not incorporate the building's 'georgian' facade into the new shopping arcade.

I'm also very upset to see the courthouse go. Though it was run-down and in disuse, the attractive coloumned facade could have been restored and formed the frontage for an elegant restaurant or boutique. I'm amazed to know that this building wan not heritage listed as some other, less architecturally attractive buildings in the area are.

Despite the loss of the courthouse, I hope Glenelg will benefit from the redevelopment of Moseley Square. One can only hope.

I am certain that Glenelg and in particular Moseley Square will benefit from the new development. Even though it looks bland, the Moseley Square frontage of the entertainment building will contain shops and restaurants which will link it with Holdfast Shores.

However I am disgusted that the local council heritage lists toilet blocks from the 1960s but not 'real' heritage buildings like the now gone courthouse. It's elegant facade could have been used as a classy restaurant or upmarket drinking establishment.

R u serious? Toilet blocks from the 60s? Has anyone got any pics of these so called "heritage" toilet blocks?

Holdfast Bay council is definately one of the loonier of Adelaide's councils. Where will the madness end?
