I'm glad that there's the focus on brickwork, but that white "modern bit" and the red verandahs work against it. I would have thought a combination of wood and iron would have been the way to go (look at some of the buildings around Ebernezer Pl and Vardon Ave, particularly the back of the Charlick Brothers building where the Belgium Beer Cafe is for a good example)

I'm hoping this gets a move along soon, being a resident of the nearby area, it will be good to have a destination such as this. Plus the current brickworks site is very sad looking.

And so's the former Plant Liquidators building.

I don't mind the modern white and red bits. I think they blend in quite well with the more traditional looking red brick parts and it's quite well designed. I just hope the interior isn't just another boring bland generic white mall. I don't want it to be old fashioned either necessarily, just something a bit different and interesting!

The most important thing as far as I'm concerned is that they keep the recreational facilities (bumper boats, go karts and crazy golf) and update and refresh them and perhaps add additional attractions too. If they don't it may as well be any other shopping centre and I won't be going. Adelaide has few fun things to do as it is so I really hope this won't result in us losing one of the few there is.

I visited the Brickworks yesterday with my 11 yr old nephew and neice to take them on the rides and the rides were all closed because the wooden bridge that leads to them has been declared unsafe by safework SA. I can't say I'm in the least bit surprised because every time I've gone across that bridge lately it's felt as if it could fall down any second and the wood is totally rotted through.

It seems a real shame though if they can't even find the money to replace a few bits of wood!

I hope this is fixed soon and I certainly hope the rides are incorporated into the redevelopment and improved upon. It would be shameful if it ends up just another boring shopping mall with a few market stalls. It could be so much more than that with nice outdoor cafes, play areas, rides, a couple of pubs and an outdoor stage for shows and maybe some indoor entertainment facilities such as roller-skating, snooker hall, laser skirmish etc.

I hope so too! I've never been there yet either.

Green light for Brickworks overhaul

Local News27 Sep 11 @ 11:12am by Lia Harris

BRICKWORKS traders have welcomed news that an $85 million overhaul of the markets has been given the green light, more than a decade after it was flagged with the council.

Woolworths was last week given approval from the Development Assessment Commission (DAC), to re-develop the 4.8ha site.

The supermarket giant first approached West Torrens Council about the development in 2009 after negotiations with other potential developers, dating back nine years, had fallen through.

The development will include a supermarket, Big W, Dan Murphy’s, about 50 specialty shops and 1000 car spaces, with the main market building and heritage-listed kiln being retained by the council.

Likely that SWP should begin by next year.

Do we know if any of the stuff like the go-kart track is staying or going yet?
