Since the two workplaces are only 30 minutes drive apart, this worker has already decided that a 90-minute or more one-way commute is acceptable (for whatever reason). It is possible that their spouse is a farmer or has an equally long commute in the other direction.

Two hours one-way actually allows for them to live near Tullamarine or other northern Melbourne suburbs, too!

I used to work with someone who commuted weekly from Northern Sydney - her husband worked at Newcastle. My wife worked at one of the vehicle manufacturers, and worked with someone who commuted weekly from Geelong after he was made redundant by Ford. Admittedly not daily commutes though.

Port’s historic woolstores to house new Pirate Life brewery

Pirate Life Brewing’s new $15 million brewery and bar venue in Port Adelaide will be located in the historic woolstores in Barlow Street and almost quadruple its annual production to more than 11 million litres.

In a statement this morning, the State Government said the new facility would be one of the largest craft breweries in South Australia, and would offer “ample room for growth”.

InDaily reported last year that the business has outgrown its inner-city base in Hindmarsh, where it was started in 2014 by West Australian father-and-son team Michael and Jack Cameron and Jack’s mate Jared “Red” Proudfoot, but at the time the exact location of the new brewery was not disclosed.

Since then, Pirate Life has been acquired by major international brewing company Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), which is based in Belgium.

The State Government will contribute $2 million from its Economic Investment Fund to the redevelopment of the historic woolstores site, with Premier Jay Weatherill saying the brewery and venue would create more than 80 jobs and become “a key tourism drawcard for the Port”.

Pirate Life chief executive John Phinney also spruiked the government partnership, adding, “we couldn’t be happier about building what will be Australia’s best craft brewing destination in Port Adelaide”.

It is being described as a “state-of-the-art” facility , with 100 per cent of its purchased electricity to be sourced from renewables by 2025.

The original Hindmarsh brewery will be turned into an “innovation centre” focused on research and development, training, and the production of specialty beers.

Although some craft beer fans had expressed disappointment over the news of AB InBev acquisition, Pirate Life said in a post on its website in December that the backing of the big brewer had enabled it to “dust off the original plans and get to work building our dream brewery down at Port Adelaide”.

“Not only are we able to build a state of the art brewery with support of people who have done it multiple times around the world, but we can also open a one of a kind hospitality venue,” it said.

Port Adelaide’s woolstore buildings date back to the mid to late 19th-century, when the suburb became the hub of the lucrative wool trade, and have been earmarked for redevelopment for both commercial and residential use.

So that's this one here then - the old Dalgety wool store. Not the most attractive part of the building but nice and close to the new station.

I wonder what effect having a growing medium sized brewery will have on future residential development of the other wool stores.

Went for a walk around Port Adelaide yesterday to see what's been happening.

Public Realm
There have been some improvements to the intersection of Nelson and St Vincent streets, but the road still dominates way too much. All roads here should be narrowed to 1 lane, with more trees and greenery to replace the bitumen.

Great to see some momentum finally down the Port, but gawd it's so boxy. How about some aged red brick, and aged steel to compliment the industrial and heritage feel of the Port! Good to see also the streetscape getting a makeover, but that grass they seem to want to plant everywhere will be a dead, litter collecting mess in no time if not maintained. Let's hope the Port council make a better job than the neighbouring Charles Sturt council. The centre of Port Road is a discrace in some sections through Charles Sturt.

Just a hypothetical, but wouldn't it be great to see the smaller businesses that make up the bulk of tenancies along Fullarton and Greenhill Road(s) enticed to relocate to the Port, opening up entire buildings on Fullarton and Greenhill Road(s) for apartment conversions and bringing a heap of low-rise business centres to fill the blanks between the heritage of the Port.

Love the idea of some of the fringe CBD companies locating to the Port, but if large scale apartment developments are to occur along Greenhill and Fullarton, then the local councils involved will need to be much smarter about demanding a better mix of amenity in those developments. No point just binging up large apartments, if there is no provision for convenience stores/IGA type supermarkets, cafes/and decent access to public transport. If not, everyone in those building will just get in their cars and drive to Norwood or Frewville to shop and this will cause chaos. Im not sure some of the local councils are up to the challenge of whole of district planning.

There was an article in The Advertiser about a petition to do with the new train line spur to Pt Adelaide. The Govt are now re-evaluating the route - hopefully for it to extend to St Vincent St.
