Holden finds buyer for soon-to-be-shut Elizabeth factory site but won't say who it is

Holden says it has found a buyer for its Elizabeth site, in Adelaide's northern suburbs, but will not reveal who it is.

The last car will roll off the Elizabeth plant's production line in two weeks and the company says the site-decommissioning process will extend into mid-2019.

The future use of the site has been hotly debated, with suggestions including electric car manufacturing and medical cannabis cultivation.

Holden said the successful buyer plans to turn it into an "innovative business park", with industries such as resources, logistics, defence and food and beverage.

It said it will retain a significant portion of the site for a spare parts operation.

While it would not reveal the name of the buyer, Holden executive director Richard Phillips said that they were from interstate.

"They have a good performance record and ability to deliver a high-quality outcome," he said.

Mr Phillips has promised renewable energies would be part of the plan for the site.

He said contracts were still being finalised and the name of the buyer will be released once that process is finished.

Interesting. Not sure if I like the idea of the site becoming a bulky supermarket, but if they can incorporate some medium density housing on the Anzac Highway side it might not be so bad.
Germany’s Kaufland buys Le Cornu site, Forestville, for $25m to set up giant 20,000sq m supermarket

THE SUPERMARKET scene in Australia is about to be blown apart by a new player which will set up shop on an iconic stretch of land on Adelaide’s CBD fringe.

Kaufland, part of the giant Schwarz Group from Germany, one of the world’s largest retailers, has paid $25 million to buy the sprawling Le Cornu site on Anzac Highway, Forestville.

Schwartz, which also owns discount chain Lidl, has been trying to gain a foothold in the Australian $90 billion plus supermarket sector for the past year and the Adelaide operation, within 3 kilometres of the city centre, will be its inaugural and flagship store.

Shoppers can expect a whole new, and vast, experience with Kaufland favouring huge, warehouse style stores of up to 20,000 sqm compared to the more traditional Coles and Woolworths stores which are generally less than a fifth of that size.

The Le Cornu site is about 36,000 sqm (8.9 acres) and had been for sale for about two years, its sheer size precluding a deal to-date said an Adelaide commercial property agent.

Kaufland will promise a whole new retail experience in Adelaide with a range of about 60,000 products, including many well known brands.

“It will be more akin to a Costco approach with a whole breath of product offerings, including groceries and white goods,” an Adelaide retail expert said.

“This is going to be a destination shopping experience.”

Kaufland, which only opened its first hypermarket in Gemany in 1984, has more than 1230 stores in Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland and other, non English speaking, central European countries and has more than 150,000 employees.

Sales agent, CBRE’s Ben Heritage, who brokered the Anzac Highway deal welcomed the settlement.

“After two years of marketing we have reached a fantastic outcome for the Le Cornu family. It is a prominent and landmark site and is good news for Adelaide and South Australia,” he said.

Kaufland, headquartered in the tiny town of Neckarsulm in southwest Germany, did not respond to the Advertiser’s requests to comment but its Australian website confirms its intent.

“Kaufland has an ambitious Australian investment and development program. Therefore we are always looking to purchase suitable and appropriate sites,” it says and highlights site requirements 15,000 to 20,000 sqm.

The sale was a joint venture between Adelaide commercial property heavyweights CBRE and JLL.

The Le Cornu family, which has run its retail operations on Anzac Highway since 1973, has gradually been selling off its assets — including the nearby 7500 sqm site to the Shahin family for $6 million two years ago — since patriarch Lance le Cornu passed away in 2013.

The Forestville plot, which has been a self-service furniture warehouse and airconditioned showroom in recent years, is on the site of the former Chrysler car assembly plant.

The North Adelaide Le Cornu store was closed in 1988 and its site, owned by the Makris Group, has been empty ever since.

Looks like the Le Cornu site at Keswick will become a Kaufland. I think they're Germany's answer to Walmart - and own Lidl (who are Aldi's main competitor overseas).

I have merged these two threads because people often post the same news in both.

I wonder if Kaufland (lol nice name "Buy Land") could be persuaded to purchase the other Le Cornu site? 8)

Or better yet, the three disused Masters buildings.
For starters, my avatar is the well-known Adelaide Aquatic Centre insignia from 1989.

Kaufland hey! I don't think you will find a pharmacy section nor liquor on shelves in South Australia as per this Kaufland tour. Unless the laws are modernised to accommodate.

It's essentially Central/Eastern European Wal-Mart, right?

I wouldn't describe them as like Walmart... more on the groceries angle. The term hypermart gets thrown at them. A lot of people liken them to CostCo without the membership and bulk goods.

I love the bleak music in the polish video above. Makes it sounds like the end of the world.

I'm only going to get on board if everything is in German, all the products are German and they sell a lot of wurst. ;)

Not exactly.

1) It's not really correct to call them Central/Eastern European. They are German. 100%. That's why people here in central Europe shop there. It's something linked in with the history of communism and actually a field of academic study here. Called the "vysehrad 4" (by a Slovakian researcher) it basically means that the ex communist countries Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland get sold the shittest products in the European market because they grew up under Communism and aren't expected to notice the difference. The reality is it isn't true. People in Central Europe got so sick of getting shafted that they would actually go over the border in to Austria and Germany to do the big shop. And people really do notice the difference. My partner works in a school and they couldn't figure out why some of the students smelled so much nicer than others. One of them figured out that they were buying fabric softener from a local vietnamese retailer which was sourcing their stuff in Austria. Consumers here are hot on it. Hence why they consider Lidl and German retailers to be like their saviours  Think of it like Aussies fawning over German cars, but here they also fawn over German vegetables and cleaning products. My partner's mum stalks the letterbox for the Lidl junk mail. German quality at communist prices, happy days that.

2) Walmart stores in the USA have everything. Like a woolies/kmart/bunnings. Kaufland stores here are more like large supermarkets that are harder to find shit in. Like what was said above, a hypermarket which is code for "bigger and harder to find shit in."

Driving up Grand Junction Road today, there look like three tower cranes in Hope Valley not far before Hancock Road. I didn't get a chance to look properly, but I think they might have all been on crawlers, so not fixed cranes, but certainly larger than a "normal" mobile crane. The site might be some sort of SA Water facility?
