Trams will continue all the way to the AEC in the centre or median strip of the road. It will go down North Tce and Port Road. The double bridge will be joint in the middle to allow trams to go over it. It will be at road height.

I have found a link which includes a floor plan as well as full specifications for the Madrid/Adelaide Citadis fleet. Beware, all of the text is in Swedish but (thanks to Google translate), I have had the main specifications translated into English. The floor plan and specifications are on the second page.

the DTEI webpage has been updated in regards to the construction work around North Terrace/West Terrace/Port Road intersection.

North Terrace

Works commenced in this area in mid May 2009. Activities include:
* General site works on the northern side of North Terrace such as site levelling, pavement replacement and kerbing.
* Modifications to the West Terrace/North Terrace intersection involving changes to traffic lanes and the island median. These modifications will maintain the existing traffic movements and will allow for future direct access from West Terrace to the site of the new Royal Adelaide Hospital. Bus stop B2 temporarily relocated

Bus stop B2 on North Terrace will be temporarily closed from Thursday 28 May 2009 for a period of 2-3 months to ensure the safety of pedestrians during construction works in the area for the tramline extension project.

Buses that use this stop are:
99C, 143, 145, 241, 242, 245, 248

All passengers will be required to use stop C1 during this time.

This temporary closure is necessary as pedestrian movements will be prohibited along the northern side of North Terrace during the period outline above.

Pedestrians will be required to cross at the signalised crossing at C1 (and the City West tram terminus) and use the footpath on the southern side of North Terrace. Please see the diagram below for more detail.

B2 Stop Temporary closure diagram
Gaol Road Bridge


Work will be undertaken from 27 May 2009 to reinforce and infill the Gaol Road Bridge to accommodate tram tracks for the Coast to Coast Light Rail - City West to Adelaide Entertainment Centre project. This will result in:

* The temporary closure (for approximately three months) of the city-bound median lane (right hand-side lane) on Port Road over the Gaol Road Bridge.
* Placement of concrete barriers around work area on bridge.
* Lane closures where required to allow for the delivery of materials to the work site.

Nightworks to prepare the Gaol Road Bridge for the future placement of tram tracks will be undertaken on Friday 5, Wednesday 10, Thursday 11 and Friday 12 June 2009 between 7pm and 2am the following day. These works are being undertaken at night to minimise disruption to the rail lines operating under the bridge. During the works the following restrictions will be in place:

* Traffic on Port Road over the bridge will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
* Speeds will be reduced to 25kph.

Access in and out of Gaol Road will be maintained during all works outlined above.
Port Road (between Gaol Road Bridge and James Congdon Drive)

Road widening works on the southern side of Port Road between Gaol Road and James Congdon Drive will be undertaken in the near future. These works will result in traffic restrictions, including lane closures and speed restrictions until early September 2009.

Bus stop 1 on Port Road has been temporarily relocated to the east of the Gaol Road Bridge in readiness for these works and as a result service works in the area. The bus stop will operate from this location until September 2009.

The footpath on the southern side of Port Road will be closed during the above works to ensure the safety of pedestrians during works. Signage will be provided to direct pedestrians to cross at the Gaol Road Bridge lights and use the footpath on the northern side of Port Road.

I know this is OT, but recentlY I was trying to find the map of the proposed 'coast to coast' tram network and I couldn't find it- anyone got a link?

I have found some additional information about the new Citadis fleet in a public press release from the SA State Premier, Mike Rann. I have highlighted a couple of points of interest from the press release.

Sourced from the Spanish capital Madrid, through negotiations with local transport authority Mintra, the six Alstom Citadis model 302 trams will commence shipping to Australia from next month at a cost of around $6 million each.

Upon arrival in Melbourne the trams will undergo minor modifications to tailor them to Adelaide’s requirements.

The first vehicles will be transported to Adelaide in November and trialled on the local network before commencing operation over the Christmas/New Year period.


Transport Minister Patrick Conlon said the trams were originally purchased for use on Madrid’s light rail network but became available for purchase by South Australia following a delay in Madrid’s planned network extensions.

“These trams will be modified slightly to meet the technical needs of our rail operator TransAdelaide but we are very confident they will deliver the capacity improvements we are looking for,” Mr Conlon said.

“Madrid’s weather conditions are very similar to those we experience here in Adelaide so with some minor modifications these vehicles should be a great fit for our city.


“Since we extended the tramline people have voted with their feet and they now use a light rail service that better meets their needs.

"With new trams and further extensions we will deliver an even better service.

“Thursday’s State Budget underpinned the Rann Government’s unprecedented investment in public transport and this result proves again our determination to provide a system that makes Adelaide one of the best cities in Australia to live, work and do business.”

That link mentions something about the new ticketing system being ordered this year. Is that still happening and what sort of system will it be based on?

Got some more photos of the extension work today. Looks like work is now in full swing along North Terrace and Port Road right upto James Cogdon Drive intersection, the whole section being worked on in one form or another.

They should carry it along West Street Bowden and connect it to the Train station and use it as a interchange. While part of the land was still empty after clearance. Major spot for a park and ride. Instead of using the useless Entertainment car park. Why the conlon's liver they put bloody channel 7 there in the corner.

The Bowden Villiage is actually going there, so there won't be room for a Park and Ride in this location.

Nor should there. Park and Rides are indications that your public transport system is failing to serve parts of the community.
