Underpass won't affect traffic

SOUTH Rd will remain open to traffic while the Anzac Highway underpass is built.
Final plans released yesterday show the underpass will be to the west of the existing South Rd.
Moving the underpass west meant 81 properties would have to be acquired rather than the 77 originally announced in April, Transport Minister Patrick Conlon said.
"This is the least impact on the community possible," he said.
The construction would cost $64.7 million, contributing to a total project cost still estimated to be more than $100 million, he said. If it was completed for less the contractors would receive a percentage of the money saved as a bonus, he said.
Mr Conlon would not reveal how much would be spent on the compulsory acquisitions, saying to do so would be a compromise of taxpayers' money because negotiations were not finalised.
The underpass is expected to be completed by mid 2009.
An open day will be held at St Joseph's Church, 546-554 South Rd, on Sunday 11.30am-4.30pm.
A second open day will be held at Castle Plaza on Thursday October 26, 3-8pm.

Haven't made a comment on the South Road upgrades as yet, but how are these upgrades going to improve traffic flow for the rest of South Road north and south of these underpasses? South Road will never resolve the problem unless it is widened and all side streets except major roads are blocked off. Adelaide needed a north-south freeway years ago.

Underpass to top $140m
NICK HENDERSON, POLITICAL REPORTER
December 14, 2006 12:15am
THE State Government has admitted huge mistakes over the costing of the new Anzac Hwy-South Rd underpass.
That now has a budget of $140 million after originally being allocated $65 million.
Office of Major Projects and Infrastructure executive director Rod Hook yesterday said his department got its estimations "terribly wrong".
Other infrastructure projects have been rescheduled to fund the extra cost of the project. Although the budget now was $140 million, Mr Hook said the project would not cost more than $118 million.
Opposition infrastructure spokesman Martin Hamilton-Smith said that was doubtful: "The Government budgeted $140 million . . . They clearly believe themselves that is what they need to put away.
"They are hoping, wishing and they are praying that it will be $118 million but let's see.
"Their track record to date suggests it will cost $140 million."
The Government has not revealed the $140 million figure publicly, although was advised of the figure in June. "In June, 2006, Cabinet was advised that provisions should be made in the budget and in the Government's forward estimates for an amount of $140 million to cover the cost," Mr Hook said.
Mr Hamilton-Smith said the delay was unacceptable and reflected on the Government's financial managements skills.
"Right back in May last year, they plucked a figure out of the sky, they made election promises that $65 million would be the figure," he said. "They said they were financial managers. Now we are finding they are irresponsible financial managers."
Mr Hook said his department had advised Infrastructure Minister Patrick Conlon not to publicly release the $118 million estimate until it had been confirmed.
Acting Transport Minister John Hill said the Government had always been open about the costing process: "The Transport Minister went to Parliament in May, saying (it) would cost more than $100 million."

it still isnt any clearer from the PDF or the video whether the underpass will terminate before the tram line and if so where does the tramline go? does it go under south road or will it go over (bridge)...because if the underpass terminates at the tramline then it wont be speeding up any traffic!! between the pedestrian crossing lights at black forest primary school and the tram line boomgates i can huge problems with traffic banking up!
if someone could check this out for me it would greatly appreciated!!

The video should make it clear. The underpass does not continue under the tram line, and the crossing remains unchanged. This will probably become the achilles heel of this section of South Road once the underpass is done as South Road will have two grade seperated crossings of major intersections either side.stelaras wrote:it still isnt any clearer from the PDF or the video whether the underpass will terminate before the tram line and if so where does the tramline go? does it go under south road or will it go over (bridge)...because if the underpass terminates at the tramline then it wont be speeding up any traffic!! between the pedestrian crossing lights at black forest primary school and the tram line boomgates i can huge problems with traffic banking up!

In my opinion South Road is one big Achilles Heel! They can spend all the money they want on a few underpasses/overpasses or whatever, if it isn't a North-South Freeway it won't solve traffic problems. They also need to get most commuters onto buses/rail and some road freight onto rail.AG wrote:...This will probably become the achilles heel of this section of South Road...

Following final approval last week by Planning Minister Paul Holloway, this important infraestructure project is set to begin construction later this month.
The first stage of construction will involve the demolition of four already vacant houses. Three houses are on the western side of South Road whilst the other is on the eastern side.
60 properties have already being acquired, and final negotiations are continuing with the last few property owners.
In total 85 buildings will need to be razed, with this occuring within the next few months. Also 15 trees will need to be felled.
Furthermore for the first half of the year, construction work will focus on moving telephone and other services.
