In 20 years, if a pipe were to crack, how would they get to it to replace it? This would have looked much better but also would have cost a lot more in the long run.
Not saying they couldn't hide them better in their current location (I've never actually looked up and looked for pipes when I've been driving under it so I'm not entirely sure how bad they look) but I think they were right not to put them inside, unless there are access points along the roadway.
Looking forward to a free-flowing Adelaide!

Well, I'm no engineer, but I'm sure it would have been possible to design it in such a way that all pipe work, be it stormwater or electrical or data, be confined within the structure(the large precast sections they made nearby and hoisted into place), and access manholes/doors/whatevers, designed into them at certain intervals along the structure to allow for maintenance and upgrades to occur.

I don't know if any of you saw the precast sections up close, but they were huge. I'm not joking about being able to fit over 20 people in them.

There are access points along the roadway. But as access is through the roadway itself, it's best to avoid having to do so.

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

It looks horrendous from that angle, but while your driving past it on the superway that section actually looks good.
Really it should have been designed to cover the concrete beneath.

I don't understand what the point of those three lots of white posts that are covered in pink, purple, orange and yellow plastic now is..why don't they put some LED lighting in them, same with the wavy green section above?

looks like it was inspired by some of the crap motorways in Melbourne:

The colour scheme reminds me of BP/On the Run.

That said it does seem to work a bit better when driving along the road - if you have the time to appreciate it.

It's best in the early evening when the setting sun is shining through the panels. As you drive past at 90km/h the entire road is bathed in colour and you get this intense rapid strobe effect. Actually surprised they were allowed to do it, seems like it would be a major epilepsy trigger.

I too was of the same opinion when driving around Melbourne for work but I have a theory that it's to break up the long distances travelled where all you see is concrete and bitumen (Helping drivers stay more alert).

I think it might be a filter for the headlights of cars travelling along grand junction road, hence the colours.

Driving southbound on the Superway today, I quiet liked the road artwork and in particular those colourful vertical pillars.

I also note that on the Torrens to Torrens section, a house was being actively demolished.

Main North Road northbound also gave me a pleasant surprise early afternoon on Tuesday last week. Only three full stops between Gepps Cross and the Gawler Bypass. Not bad for 24 sets of signals.

Well seem those exposed pipes are being covered by some cornee triangular gap filler things.
And there's more purple lighting along the pillars now.

I reckon the DPTI was trolling the traffic on the Superway tonight, dropping the speed on the off ramp to Salisbury Highway to 40 for no reason.

One of the signs approaching the elevated section was showing a hazard on 'blah'.
